Here's what I know about my Wicklow ancestors -

Family lore, first - "They lived across the river from one another"  Not much, but who knows.

Peter dob June 29, 1833 Wicklow, died August 30, 1894 in Spring Valley, Illinois, U.S.

Mary dob December 25, 1834 Wicklow, died March 4, 1909 also Spring Valley, Illinois U.S.

Most of the records I have are from England but they id'd them as Ireland born as does statement made by them as well as death records..

Peter worked coal mines in the Wakefield, York area as well as in Illinois so maybe did so during early years in Wicklow.

From RC marriage records, in Latin of course - St Austin's in Wakefield, York.  Married November 11, 1855. Peter was the son of William and Esther Doyle.  Mary was the daughter of Garrard and Mary Murray.  GRO record of their marriage listed Garrard as a Gardener and William as an Agricultural Laborer.

I found Mary, her father, name spelled Gerard as well as siblings Winifred, Catherine and Alice in the 1851 English Census of Wakefield living with another Murray family whose head, Patrick was the same age as Gerard - 50 so twins ? or maybe cousins. Not confirmed one way or another. Per the census Patrick's wife was Nabby ? children Michael, James, Mary, Alice and Patrick. Did not find Peter Doyle in the English 1851 census.

No record of Peter arriving in the U.S., but Mary and the first 4 children William, Edward, Winifred and Peter arrived in the U.S. on October 3, 1864.

My late uncle, James Doyle was in touch with cousins in Ireland, but that was back in the '30's and 40's. he was the Ass't Postmaster in Spring Valley until his sudden death in 1948, so maybe his position helped in tracking down the now lost cousins. Any correspondence disappeared at that time

Hope to determine Townland and RC parish as well as any cousins. Any additional records would be a blessing.

Thanks,    Art Pratt

Hi Art,  do you have any idea what part of Wicklow they were from, if you did know then you could find out birth places and baptisms.

Have you had your DNA done yet, that will help a lot, because you will find family who have done their DNA and then you will be able to build a family tree.

There are a couple of DNA companies you could price them out and get it when they have a special, then you can upload your DNA to MyHeritage and Ancestry free and go from there, your DNA will always be at the place where you had it done.

It’s great fun getting hints about your family you can search on their databases and find out so much info.

    Good luck on your search

Hi Art:  I found 2 baptism records for a Peter Doyle with a father William Doyle.  However, the mother's name is not Esther.

    1.  Here is the first record:  Peter Doyle baptised 2 March 1830.  Mother Elizabeth Byrne.  Parish is Kilquade.  Sponsors were:  Michael Byrne and Anne Byrne.

     2.  Peter Doyle baptised 7 July 1829.  Mother was Eliza Tool.  Parish is Rathdrum.  Sponsors were:  William Byrne and Catherine Walsh.   I did not find any Mary Murray baptism with a father named Gerard Murray.

I'm going to forward this query to our Wicklow volunteer as he is more familiar with the landscape than I am and he may be able to shed further light on your query.  You should expect to hear from him within the next week or so.

    All the best,

    Jane

  •  I've done the DNA, uploaded it to the various sites and did tne mtDNA as well and most of unknown leads are to another mystery - a great grandmother out of Limerick. That's another story for another time.

The RC record is in Latin and of course handwritten - but it "Esther" is quite readible.  Maybe my Latin is too rusty and it's not William as Peter's father.  I'll ask my pastor how good his Latin is or find someone to translate and go from there.

    Thanks,    Art

  • I see a few William Doyles around County Wicklow with wife named Esther but none so far with a son named Peter around the right time. On the Murray side I see that double Murray household in Wakefield and I'm immediately drawn to her younger siblings, all born Ireland if that census is correct and some nice unusual names, these are great for searches, so have tried a few options for Alice and Winifred without any success so far... do you have any clues, or possible family stories for the maiden surnames for Esther and Mary ?

We had very little good quality coal in Ireland, and no mining operation for Coal in Wicklow that I know of but there were various mines in the county mineral products - lead, and silver etc, although based on William's  occupation as Gardener it doesn't look like mining was a family tradition.

There are quite a number of rivers in Co. Wicklow - see this 1837 map of Co,. Wicklow (Lewis), so unfortunately that clue might not help much unless combined with some additional clue - e.g. name of a nearby town, or a significant geographic feature.

just to note that Esther can sometimes be noted as Hester, Etty, Essie, Essy etc, it's a biblical name and from what I remember the Latin form is usually recorded as one of these. The Latin for William is Gulielmus, Gulielmi etc

I'll have a further look around and let you know... have you found additional English census returns for either the Murray of Doyle families ?

These can sometimes supply additional clues that could provide a vital step in the the research...
