Gilbert Smith, born 1831, w/ father Adam Smith and mother uncertain

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland but did not find a record. You did not mention the religious denomination of the family. Roots Ireland has Dunshaughlin RC records back to the late 1700s. However, Church of Ireland records for Dunshaughlin are not on Roots Ireland.

I further checked this file https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1889/02458/1913360.pdf  which indicates that baptismal records for Dunshaughlin Church of Ireland parish start in 1839 but are only available at the Representative Church Library in Dublin. However, since you believe Gilbert was baptized in 1831 a record would not be available.

By the way, civil registration of births started in Ireland in 1864.

Patrick Smith from Meath, is buried in St, Francis Borgia Cemetary, Cedarburg , Wis. He had dealings with my GGrandfather about 1865. Maybe relation.

Thanks, Roger and Bill, for the time and effort.   Gilbert’s sister, Mary, married in the Catholic Church in NEW YORK, so am guessing that Gilbert, too, was Catholic.  Have looked for family trees on Ancestry with Adam as father, with those two children ( and I’m sure, others), but haven’t found it yet.  For now ...it remains a mystery....haven’t so far found a marriage record for Gilbert. Suppose it is possible that he died in the Civil War. The Brutons and Smyths came over in 1849 from Dublin together on same ship, but that doesn’t tell us much.
