Hello, I am looking for Patrick McShane born around1813-1820 who according to the 1831 Census of Londonderry worked the fields of Killymuck along with Francis McShane. He had 2 daughters Margaret b. 1840 and Ann (Nancy) b. 1846 Mcshane. Margaret married Patrick McGuckin and Nancy married Edward McCann. I am trying to connect this family to McShanes that ended up in Brooklyn, New York. The New York names and possible brothers of Patrick are John, Andrew and maybe Owen McShane. I found a tombstone record for a Patrick McShane who is buried in the Church of St. Patrick in Crossmaglen, County Armagh. Would it be fesible for someone from Crossmaglen to work and live in Killymuck? Thanks. Kathy Didden

Kathy,
I had a look in the tithe applotment records for Tamlaght O’Crilly parish in 1833. There are no McShane farms in Killymuck:
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/derry/tithe-applotments/tamlaght-o-crilly-parish.php
So what that tells us is that the Patrick living there in 1831 was not a farmer. He was most probably an agricultural labourer or some other trade without any significant quantity of land. That seems to be confirmed by Griffiths Valuation (1859) which lists a Patrick McShane in a labourers cottage (plot 23c) on a farm in Killymuck Glebe. (That farm today is up a lane at the junction of the Dunglady and Ampertaine Roads.).
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch
The Valuation revision records show Patrick remaining as tenant of that cottage till 1877 when he is replaced by someone else, suggesting either he had died or moved on by that year. There is a death registered in Ballymomey on 17.11.1873 for a man aged 55. Perhaps that’s him? You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:
You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.
You ask whether someone living in KIllymuck would be buried in Crossmaglen in Co Armagh, or whether someone living in the oen place would work in the other. The short answer is no. That’s about 80 miles away. If Patrick lived all his life in Tamlaght O’Crilly, he’ll be buried there. And if he was a labourer, he is most unlikely to have a gravestone. Most labourers couldn’t afford one. The only exception is where wealthier relatives eg in the USA paid for one to be erected. But most labourers in Ireland in the mid 1800s were buried without a gravestone.
Now having said that, I looked at the civil marriage certificate for Nancy McShane’s marriage to Edward McCann in 1874 in Bellaghy chapel. It shows that she was living in Tamniaran, near Castledawson. That’s in the parish of Ballyscullion and some distance from Killymuck. I also notice her father was described there as a farmer. Are you sure the Killymuck Patrick is the same one as Nancy’s father? (Patrick McShane is a common enough name in the area. I can see 9 people of that name who died around Castledawson between 1864 and 1890).
How do you know that the lady in Tamniaran in 1874 is the daughter of Patrick from Killymuck?

I found a likely brother to Margaret & Nancy. Charles McShane of Killymuck married Mary Crilly in 1875. Again I see his father Patrick McShane described as a farmer. So perhaps his circumstances had changed over the years (though I don’t see him listed as having any land in Killymuck in the land records. However possibly he worked Francis;s farm. I see Francis had just under 9 acres on plot 2).
Also, John McShane, farmer of Killymuck, and son of Francis McShane married Jane Bradley on 4.4.1872 in Killelagh Church of Ireland:

Elwyn, Thank you so much for your informative response. My information comes two DNA matches Rose and her son Kevin O'Kane. The only connection we share are the McShanes. According to Kevin his knowledge is based on informed speculation , local knowledge, and oral family testimony. His 3x grand-mother Margaret McShane was born in 1840 probaly in the townland of Killymuck, near Upperlands in Derry. She married Patrick McGuckin in the local Catholic Church in Kilrea, on November 8th,1857. The only name that appears on their church record is that of her father ,Patrick McShane. There are no cilvil records from that time. The address of both parties is listed as Ligorgan, which is a neighboring townland of Killymuck. Kevin believes both families were actually from Killymuck . Griffith's vaulation for 1858 shows only 17 families in the Lisgorgan townland and none of them McShane or McGuckin. However just a few fields away in Killymuck there is a tenant, Michael McGuckin and a Francis McShane listed also. Also Patrick and Margaret's first 3 children were born in Killymuck and they lived on Patrick McShane's farm for the first few years of their marriage. An elderly relative of Kevin said the the farm was called White hill. They later moved to Tirnony up the road in Maghera.
In the 1831 census for Killymuck you will see a Patrick McShane inhabiting a house with two other males and three females.
Patrick McShane had another daughter Ann (NANCY) who moved from the family home to Tamniaran, Castledawson which is about 10 miles from the home place. She married Edward McCann in Bellaghy on November 15th, 1874.
My Brooklyn New York McShanes were John McShane b. 1818 Ireland, married to Elizabeth Doyle, Andrew McShane b. 1813 Ireland, married to Bridget. My great- grandfather was Anthony McShane born in Brooklyn in 1840. These are the McShanes I am trying to connect back to Ireland hopefully to Patrick McShane.
Many thanks for you interest and help.
Whew! This is hard work! Many thanks for your interest.

There is a pat mcshane still alive and I know he was trying to trace his family tree earlier this year. I will be able to get his contact details and will pass them on asap. Hopefully he will be the link you're looking for.

Hi happy birthday!! Sorry I haven't been able to contact pat yet but i just found out my 84 year old father is Pat's godfather. Apparently him and Pat's father were workmates at that time and good friends. He says their burial ground is in Swatragh in st John's church in the parish of Granaghan if you want to try records there until I can get you more details.
