Hi, I am trying to find any further information for a Thomas Byrne baptised 30th June 1816 at St Nicholas Within. Father Thomas Mother Eleanor. I have no further information re the parents but any other details re Thomas's life pre 1841 when he married Margery in Liverpool or his parents would be great. Thanks in advance

  • Hi Elaine

Although his baptism turns up on IrishGenealogy.ie, neither rootsireland.ie nor registers.nli.ie have any records for this parish at that time.

We'd love if you added your Thomas Byrne to our Ancestors roll-call for St Nicholas Within to see if anyone can identify a match (add as much as you know about siblings and naming patterns of his children).

    Here's how: Ancestors Masterclass

  • Most of the surviving Catholic and Church of Ireland records for Dublin city are included in the free IrishGenealogy website. Your Thomas was baptised in the Church of Ireland St. Nicholas Within,  there's also a Catholic St. Nicholas in Dublin City. Unfortunately Church of Ireland baptisms records did not usually include the mother’s maiden surname so no details are given as to Eleanor’s surname. I see no sign of a likely marriage for Thomas & Eleanor in the available records for Dublin - it’s possible they married outside the city, or in another part of Ireland.

Does the civil marriage record for Thomas Byrne and Margery Johnston include an occupation for Thomas snr. ?

If so, depending on his occupation etc this might help locate him in other sources if he remained in Dublin e.g. directories.

There are some possible siblings to your Thomas baptised in the same parish, and others baptised in the adjacent Church of Ireland parishes of St. Nicholas Without and St. Audeon, parents in each case Thomas Byrne & Eleanor / Ellinor - these early baptism records dont include much detail so no address or occupation, so can be difficult to separate out the different families...they can be viewed on IrishGenealogy, enter surname Byrne and either father’s firstname, or mother’s firstname..

added : looks like Thomas used the surname Barnes  when in Liverpool - is this your Thomas ?
his 1841 marriage cert, coincidently in St. Nicholas CofE,  to Margery Johnston in 1841 shows his father Thomas snr. as a Blacksmith..
