I have been researching my family history for over 30 years including many visits to Ireland predominantly  to Co Roscommon and also Co. Galway & Mayo.

I have been extremely fortunate to find remaining family in the Cloonfad/Ballinlough/Parish of Kitullagh area from photo's taken by my forebears in the 1930's.

I have now been able to put together a family tree covering some 7 generations from c1830 to date.

I would be delighted to hear from any interested parties.

I have also published a book about my journey of discovery & finding extended members of the family in Ireland & many of those who emigrated to USA in the 1920's onward.

Also, I have delved into  the Clan dimension of the family name & the significant role that the Geraghty's performed going way back to the 12th Cen.

The book entitled "The Celtic Fringe" by Nick Geraghty is currently available on Amazon.

My great-great grandmother, Mary Gerrity, married Edward Colleran at Ballintuber, County Mayo, on March 7, 1852.

    Would she be a relation?

    thank you,

  • Hi Jimmy,

Great to hear from you and I would advise that the Geraghty Clan were widespread in the province of Connacht in the west of Ireland & predominantly, (but not exclesively), Co's Mayo, Rocommon & Galway going back to the 12 Cen and before. My line were literially from the  borders of these 3 counties.

From the times of Cromwell the Irish were pushed further west as the land was poor and did not yield good crops & their, by now English landlords, wanted the rich pastures of the Midland and the East to grow crops which in turn they sent back to England. The rest as they say is history.

So many Geraghty's were in Mayo and many managed to escape the revages of the Famine, leaving from Belmullet & Westport in Mayo to the new world. approx1,00,000 starved to death and approx 1,000,000 left Ireland never to return, as was the case with my own grandfather. We;ve been to Ballintuber which is approx 26 miles west of Cloonfad where my family were from.

Ultimately all Geraghty's are related BUT establishing the relationship is very extremely difficult due to the absence of records and indeed many records were destroyed over the years and many in the uprising in the fire at the porst office in Dublin 1922.

Look forward to hearing from you
