I am at an absolute brick wall. My 3rd Great grandparents are listed on census with various spellings of names. Graghan,Grogan Greghan.Thomas 1818 and Bridget 1825 ish Galway that's all I have, Because of spellings I don't know what I am looking for! They had son John in Ireland 1843 he is listed later on as Grogan and seems to keep that spelling.However my great great grandad his brother born in England ( can't find his birth or christening) on marriage as Graham then his daughters birth and marriage is Graghan,You see my dilemma ?They were RC .I am wondering what the surname would be in Galway..?understand they were prob illiterate and a strong accent would not be interpreted well by census recorder.

Griffith's Land Valuation taken in the 1840'/50's has a varied selection of the names: - Gregan c(90) fairly widespread, O'Grehan, Grehan, Greaghan (20) North Mayo, Sligo, Meath, variant: Graham.Grayhan,, O'Greachain (Gaelic), O'Grogan, Grogan (original location - Roscommon) now widespread , variant, ( O'Gruagain, Groogan - Ulster).
