Hello. My 3rd Great grandparents Daniel Ryan and Mary Meagher were married in Cappawhite, tipperary on 23 Feb, 1830.  They had 4 children: Thomas 1831, Mary 1832-1912, Cornelius (my 2nd gt gfather)1835-1878 and Philip 1839.  Mary and Cornelius came out to Australia and married over here.  I have no futher information on Thomas or Philip.  I would love to find out more about them.

I am very keen to find the names of the parents of Daniel Ryan and Mary Meagher.  Contact from a distant cousin through a DNA match makes us believe that Daniel had a sister, Catherine Ryan, whose estimated birth year is 1803.  Catherine married John Duhy and they had 2 daughters, Honora and Catherine, born in Tipperary and then another daughter, Mary Ann, born in England.  It would be great if I could actually find the parent names, especially of Daniel as I would love to be able to link him to Catherine Ryan.

There are several baptism certificates for Daniel and Mary's children with many names that could well be family (having same surnames, common names as they are), but I would only be guessing as to how everyone is connected.

I'd love it if someone could help me out in any way.

  • Dear Mary:

Unfortunately as most parish registers only begin during the 1800s, it may be very difficult to find out earlier ancestors.  However, if Philip or Thomas remained in Cappawhite, a family headstone may assist you with getting back another generation or so.

This website may have headstone inscriptions for the families that you have mentioned even though the graveyards are in Doon parish.  You will note that they state that a number of Cappawhite families are buried there.

    FindAGrave is another option:  https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2291535/cappawhite-cemetery

The Tipperary Studies website may have some information for you too -- https://tipperarystudies.ie/genealogy/

I will pass this query to someone in that area who may be able to assist further with local information.

If you have not created an Ancestor Profile, please consider doing so at this link:  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

Any questions, please let us know.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi PJ

I do not have a Gedmatch number.  I hav just googled what it means! I had my DNA done through Ancestry, so it sounds to me that I create a GedMatch account and then put my DNA info into that.  Is that correct?

Hi, you have to go to Ancestry and go on the left click download raw dna take and save the file. the go to GED MATCH and upload the record, go back to photos downloads and find it this will get into GED  Match I think it takes a day then it will give you your number and show you all on your matches on Ged. Then you can go down the Ged match pg and connect to the ancestry account it has several parts of Ireland with their own matches you can erhaps find who u are looking for. Before you go the ancestry match on Ged you have to request to join the group with the original ged number they gave you, say Offaly, Tipperary , Claire what ever sectiions has a Ged match on face book.
