I am  am looking for information on  my 2nd gr. grandfather, James Doherty born about 1842. His father's name was James and his mother's name was Ann (no surname). He left Ireland sometime before 1865 and settled in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Finding RC parish records in Co. Donegal pre-1850 is difficult sine most parishes records start around 1850 or later. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest James Doherty baptismal record with parents James and Ann was in 1850 likely too late for your interests. The transcription of the record is below. As you likely know, Doherty was the most common surname in Co. Donegal in the 19th century. You may want to add James' story to our XO Chronicles site  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

  • Thank you so much. I am debating whether or not to get a one month subscription to Roots Ireland. Both sets of 3rds were Irish.  My maternal 3rds left Ireland but no idea when except it had to be prior to 1847 because my 2nd gr. grandmother was born in Boston.  Her death certificate states both her parents were born in Ireland.  Trying not to get discouraged.  I am sure I have distant family in Coumty Donegal.  Again thank you.
