Thomas Nevin was born in Roscommon Ireland in May, 1862. He immigrated to US in 1885 (found him on 1900 New York Census). He was married to Winifred Benson (1893), had children. After she died he returned to Roscommon Ireland. Found him on 1911 Ireland Census (Corbo Roscommon). He married Ellen Gilleran (born 1/1/1874, marriage date 4/19/1909. Had three children, my grandfather Thomas Nevin one of them. Ellen died 7/28/1916. Thomas died 6/17/1924.
Know nothing about Thomas’s parents or siblings or exact birth date. On marriage record from first wife, it says his father’s name was Thomas and mother was Ellen Schrows. On 1900 NY Census it said his parents were from Ireland.
I know there are variants of the Nevin name. When I tried to search his father I could not find anything.
If anyone knows anything about my ancestors I would love to hear from you.
Thanks.
Mary

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The closest baptismal record that I located on the subscription site Roots Ireland was in 1854. See below. I know that your Thomas was consistent with his age pointing to an 1862 year of birth.
Roscommon parish was just south of Kilbride parish. There were no Nevin/Navins in the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilbride parish but there were four Nevins in Roscommon including the Thomas below. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/roscommon.htm
In any event, keep the record below as a lead.

Hi Roger,
Thank you but I believe my grandfather Thomas Nevin was born in May, 1862 as he was listed on the 1900 US New York Census. Also, his first marriage to Winifred Benson in NY in 1893 mentions his age. His father is also Thomas Nevin and mother Ellen Schrows. He immigrated to the US in 1885. Says his parents are also from Ireland. He married my father Michael Nevin’s mother Ellen Gilleran in Ireland on April 19, 1909. Ellen died in Corbo Kilbride on July 28, 1916. My grandfather Thomas Nevin died in Corbo Kilbride on June 24, 1924. I could not find a birth record on him or anything on his parents. I did find a death record for Ellen Nevin (maybe my great grandmother) her death on July, 24, 1909 in Corbo Kilbride with her son Thomas Nevin present at her death. Says she was a widow of a farmer so my great grandfather Thomas Nevin died before her. She was 65 making her birth year 1844 making her only 18 when she gave birth to my grandfather. Her husband Thomas Nevin, I found only one record from parish Killivoy with a birth in June 1845 making him only 17 when his son was born. Parents were Thadei Nevin and Brigidae Parker. (Really no way to verify if this belongs to my great grandfather). I am more sure of the great grandmother death record as it states Corbo Kilbride and son Thomas Nevin present at death as accurate.
Yes, I found a Thomas Nevin on the 1855 Griffiths Valuation in Cloonybeirne (maybe my great grandfather). There is also a John Nevin and James Gilleran (Ellen’s father) on the same page. Parish of Roscommon.
My father Michael was born in Roscommon in 1913 and died in 1983 in Brooklyn NY at 69 years old. He was only 3 years old when his mother Ellen Gilleran died and 11 when his father Thomas Nevin died so he didn’t know much about his family history. The cottage in Corbo Killrooskey is still there. My family visited Ireland and it in 2014 and we visited the Derrane Cemetery. My father before he died went back to Ireland and put a Nevin tombstone in the cementary honoring his ancestors.
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

Mary:
You have done a great job of researching your family. Perhaps you can add Thomas Nevin to our XO Chronicles site https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database
One issue that puzzles me is the surname of Thomas' mother. Schrows is not an Irish surname and there was no one in Ireland in the 1901 or 1911 censuses. Perhaps the name was misspelled.

Hi Roger, A lot going on so haven’t been on the site in awhile. Since I know it is hard to find records prior to 1864 and don’t know if my grandfather or great grandfather both Thomas Nevin were born in Roscommon, only know my grandfather lived there from 1911 Irish Census and married there in 1909. When I was in touch by email with someone that bought the house of a childhood neighbor of my father Michael in Corbo Kilrooskey Roscommon that Derrane Cemetary is probably not the cemetary that my ancestors are buried but where y father put a headstone.
For Catholic Parishes in Roscommon, do you know where I write to to see if I can find birth records of the grandfather and great grandfather? You are correct that Schrows is probably not correct for my great grandmother Ellen Nevin, but that was on Thomas Nevin (my grandfather first marriage record in NY).
Thanks for your help. Also don’t know if there are any relatives in Roscommon today.

Hi Everyone,
I have since my last post awhile ago have found out more about my grandfather Thomas Nevin’s mother. She was on the 1901 Irish Census but her name was misspelled Wevin, instead of Nevin living with her sister Anne and brother in law Michael Flynn. That opened up more information from the marriage record of Anne and Michael. Anne was a widow previously married to a Madden and record showed her father to be James Shruhan or some other variation Shruffin, Shuffin, Shreehan, etc. So if Anne was Shruhan, Ellen’s last name had to be the same.
Remember I knew my great grandmother name was Ellen and knew she died July 24, 1909 in Roscommon but her name on my grandfather first marriage in NY showed Schrows which we knew was incorrect. Also, found out she was widowed by 1901 and was on the 1892 US census living with her son Stephen Nevin. She was in NY from 1892 to 1895. Her husband was not on census and record does not say if widowed, just her age 52.
I have since found out that my great grandmother had brothers and sisters John 1824-1885, William 1831-1897, Bridget 1835-1908, Anne Shruhan Flynn 1834-1906. No birth record for Ellen though, but she is buried in Derrane Cemetary. Also, no birth record or death record for her husband Thomas, only their marriage record in Roscommon March 8, 1859.
Through more research, no birth record for my grandfather Thomas Nevin who is estimated to be born May, 1862 from 1900 US census. He died in Roscommon June 17, 1924 in Corbo Roscommon.
Ellen Shruhan or Shruffin had more siblings for my grandfather. James 1864-1865, Stephen 1864-1939 (died in NY) Michael J. 1869-1933 (died in NY), Mary J. McCall née Nevin 1874-1904 (died in NY) Margaret 1875 - found on 1930 US census living with Michael, age 55 and single and born in Ireland. No record of her birth or death record.
So if anyone can fill in the missing information that would be appreciated?
Thanks,
Mary Cilmi née Nevin
