My third great-grandparents (John McKinnie and Mary Ann McGhie) were married in Toboine parish in 1836. What county is Toboine parish in, please? Many thanks, Maggie Jacobs

Hi Maggie,
Have you got a document with this written on?
If you have can you upload it please.
I can't find it, sorry.
It may have been lost in translation.

Maggie/Margot:
Possibly the parish is Tibohine in Co. Roscommon. Very large civil parish. Two RC parishes within Tibohine civil parish. Fairymount records start in 1833. Frenchpark records start in 1865.

Thank you, Margot and Roger, for your replies to my question. Unfortunately I don't have any document citing the name - I think it came from other people's family trees. Also I am not sure about the county Roscommon possible connection, as I see that is situated in the center of Ireland - would it have been common for people there to end up traveling to Scotland? I would have expected most voyages to Scotland to have started from nearer to the coast (but I am no expert on that). After posting my question, I did some research on the name and discovered through Ancestry that there is a Toboyne township in Pennsylvania. I tried to look into the history of this township and found that it was named after a place called Taughboyne in county Donegal. Do you think this is more or less probable than county Roscommon? I still don't know how to get further forward. Below is a link to Toboyne township in Pennsylvania. Many thanks for any further help you can provide. Maggie

Hi Maggie, the place in County Donegal.....Taughboyne that is what I saw when searching for the name.
This is the nearest I found, spellings vary on the typed list, look on the next link and it's hand written.
I am not saying it is them but the nearest.

Margot, thanks again for this research, which DOES seem promising. I am wondering how to proceed now. Would there be a birth or marriage certificate that would prove or disprove that Toboine and Taughboyne are the same place? What would you advise? Best regards, Maggie

Thanks again for the above marriage details. It certainly looks like the marriage record for John McKinnie and Mary Ann McGhie - are the name variations acceptable? Please can you tell me how I can access this record myself? Would I need to find their birth records to find out their parents' names? How can I go about that? Thanks in advance for your continued help. Best regards, Maggie

Hi Maggie
We'd love if you added John & Mary Ann to our Ancestors roll-call for #Taughboyne. Here's how...

Maggie:
You would have to get a subscription to Roots Ireland but all you will see is the info I pasted above. Roots Ireland does not link you to the actual parish register.
The Taughboyne C of I records on Roots Ireland start in 1820 so if they were from that parish, the records would not be available since they likely were born around 1805 or so.
The name differences are acceptable.

Thank you, Roger, for your reply. Does that mean it is impossible to go further back in time? Best regards, Maggie

It occurs to me that six of John and Mary Ann's seven children were born in Ireland. The last, William, was born in West Kilbride, Ayrshire, Scotland. Of the six born in Ireland, three have just Ireland as place of birth (in my tree, based on info from other family trees), but two are given as born in Londonderry and one in Tyrone. The ones born in Londonderry are John, born, 1839 and Alexander, born 1843. Robert was born in Tyrone in 1844. I have provided these details in an Ancestor entry for John McKinnie (McKenna). Could these birth details be found and provide further info? Could the family have spent several years in migrating from Ireland to Scotland? Note that although the marriage record seems very likely, especially given Mary Ann's birth date, I still have some doubts as the children were all born a long time after 1926 (although there may be some children I don't know about who died in infancy). I will try to add an Ancestor entry for Mary Ann today. Best regards, Maggie

Maggie:
I searched on Roots Ireland but found no baptismal records for children of John McKinnie and a wife with the surname McGee. Roots Ireland only has one C of I parish in Co. Tyrone that has records back to the 1830s/1840. There are more parishes for Co. Derry with older records on Roots Ireland but not the parish that the McKinnie children were baptized.
Church of Ireland parish records can be very difficult to research. Records for many of the parishes were destroyed in the Public Records Office fire in Dublin in 1922. Other records are maintained locally and others are maintained at the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/rcb-library This information won't help you find the baptismal records you are looking for but it does give you an idea of where records are located by C of I parish across Ireland https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/ParishRegisters/PARISHREGISTERS.pdf

Thank you for your help, Roger. I will consult the sites you mentioned. I am not at all sure about the parents names I have for John McKenna (McKinnie) and Mary Ann McGhie (Magee) but is there any way of finding out if this info is true? Best regards, Maggie
