Love Lowry

Andrew Love’s marriage to Catherine Jane Lowry was in 1882 at which time her address was Drumnacarry, parish of Lough Eske.

William Lowery married Mary Jane Love on 21.12.1858. Both came from Drumnacarry. Her father was David Love, a labourer.

William Lowry’s farm in Drumnacarry is listed in Griffiths Valuation for 1857. He had plot 1 which was 14.5 acres. An Andrew Lowry was farming next door and is presumably related. Drumnacarry is at the southern end of Lough ESKE:

How certain are you that William Lowry died in the 1860s? I see a death for a William Lowry in Drumnacarry in 1887, aged 82. Informant was son Robert who is presumably the same man who appears in the 1901 census.

Hi Elwyn,  Thank you for that information.  I am positive William died around 1861, I will attach his wife's obit from Ontario, Canada.  Within the last several days is when I've been able to confirm William being the first name as it appears incorrectly in Mary Jane's obit.  William is listed on their daughters marriage registration as well as on Mary J. Lowrys Toronto City Directory enteries for 1887 and 1889.  I have only just confirmed Mary Jane's maiden name as well.  I know William had a brother Arthur who also immigrated to Canada but know nothing of any other siblings.  I am also somewhat confused as Mary Jane's maiden name is Love and her daughter married Andrew Love.  Are they family marrying family?  Mary Jane Lowry came to Canada in 1884 as did Catherine her daughter and daughters husband Andrew (along with their son and Andrew's sister Rebecca). I have also spent many hours researching a Rev. Jordan in Ontario and have found nothing other than a name Kate P Jordan on the admissions card for Mary Jane to an Old Age Home in Toronto in 1908.  I am wondering if Mary Jane was nurse/governess to Rev. Jordan's family in Ireland. I appreciate you taking the time to assist me in my research.

I think the explanation for the William Lowry death in 1887 is that he is the father of the William who died around 1861. 1861 was before death registration started so there will be no death certificate. The church doesn’t have any burial records for the 1860s so there may be no record of his death.

You ask about Andrew Love and Catherine Love being related. Catherine Jane came from Drumnacarry but Andrew Love came from Trumman East in the parish of Drumhome, 7 or 8 miles away. They might be related – that wouldn’t be unusual – or it might just be a coincidence.

William Lowry’s farm is fairly easy to locate. The Griffiths site shows both a contemporaneous map as well as a modern map. (There’s a slider bar in the top right hand corner of the maps screen which allows you to switch between the 2). The farm (plot 1) is on the road to what is now Lough Eske Castle hotel at Lough Eske bridge (just a hundred yards before the hotel entrance lodge). I can see from Google Earth that there is still a farm there. It looks as though plot 2 the adjacent farm (occupied by Andrew Lowry in 1857 and later years) has been combined with it.

Andrew Lowry on plot 2 looks to have died in 1878, aged 80. Possibly William senior’s brother?
