Hello Alan, I have been asked to look over older unanswered queries and came across this one. I can find no birth or marriage to match your query, there was a Joseph Copland born in Co. Down in 1802. Father James mother not recorded but as it is a Presbyterian birth they did not record the mother's name but often the Christian name, at this remove Irish records are dependent on church records hence the religion assists in knowing were to look but it is safe to say that church records at that remove are not all available, more not available than are.
There is a Joseph marrying a Flemming lady in Derry or Londonderry in 1820, he is in the military. This family would have moved with the regiment, a Fusillers, 17th I think.
Otherwise Tullamore is a large town in Offaly, Tullamain is a parish in Tipperary, Tullamaine is in Kilkenny etc
The name Copland is probably a variant of Copeland and I associate it with County Down, probably from an electoral division in England called Copeland which is in the north west.
Apologies for the delay but probably because we could not match your information.
Good Luck

Hi Pat,
Thanks for reply, having looked into my research, I now have William John Copeland's birth certificate which states his father as Joseph Copeland and mother as Bridget Fleming not Flanagan, on the 1851 England census it states their birth places as Enniscorthy and Naas respectively. Your marriage in Derry could be them hopefully, where would I find this?
Regards
Alan

Alan, I found the marriage on Roots Ireland a subscription site, it is dated as 8th November 1820 in St Coloumbs parish, it is a Church of Ireland marriage, (Anglican) her address is given as Templemore, now there are 3 Templemores in Ireland the best known is in Tipperary but there is one in Derry and this is probably her address. See https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/templemore/ this is the civil areas. He is down as the 7th Royal Fusilers, no other information given. Probably the best follow up is with PRONI in Belfast for the records but you can check location on this site here https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/search-gronis-online-records
Also they available C of I records are listed here https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/rcb-library/list-of-parish-regis… However the parish of St Columbs does not appear and may be the name of the church, the parish Templemore is listed in Derry and also a mention of see Lacken, Templemore parish appears to have records going back to 1642 (unusual) but you can trawl through it yourself.
Fleming with one M but that is probably optional is listed in McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland says the name Fleming is from "Man of Flanders" appearing in Ireland in the 12th century in Slane in Meath (about 30 miles north of Dublin) this would correspond with the arrival of the Normans in 1169. It is now found in all 4 provinces of the country.
I found no baptisms for the couple. There are 13 Flemings listed on the Flax Growers List of 1796 and one an Abraham in Templemore in Derry. There is a free site called Failte Romhat that has the list. See no Copland or Copeland, this just means there were none in Derry growing flax in 1796.
Ancestry carries military records and there is another subscription site which I think is £10 a month here https://uk.forceswarrecords.com/ but these records are linked also to Ancestry site, other sites also carry military records.
Good Luck
