Hello there from Australia!
I'm working on my family history and am trying to track further information on Edward Bloomer (1837-1901), who married Elizabeth Fox (b1841-unknown). They were married in Shercock:
28 Jan 1869 • Presbyterian Church, Parish of Shercock, County Cavan, Ireland
Edward Bloomer, full age, farmer, bachelor, of Latterniff, son of John Bloomer, farmer Elizabeth Fox, age 20, spinster Kilcrossduff, Parish of Shercock, Co Cavan, daughter of Thomas Fox, farmer Witnesses George Bloomer and William Faux.
I'm particularly trying to track their parents...John Bloomer and Thomas Fox. There seem to be multiple people of similar names and identifying with any accuracy is really problematic.
Edward and Elizabeth had a number of children including Margaret and Elizabeth who emmigrated to Australia. I'm decended from Margaret and I've made contact with another cousin who's descended from Elizabeth.
Any help would be immensely appreciated.
Many thanks indeed
Amanda :-)

Hi Amanda,
Lets see if I can help you. You are lucky in that the name is rare, therefore you most likely can assume that they are all the one family. Alas the name appears to have died out by 1901 there is only one Catherine Bloomer, a widow in Shercock town, she died in The Workhouse in Bailieborough and her occupation was 'Medicant', which meant she lived by begging, therefore it would appear that she had no one to support her. There is one in 1911, but she was an English born governess, working for Lord Farnham outside Cavan town. Taking the information from the marriage cert it would appear that both fathers were still alive in 1869 when Edward and Elizabeth got married. I used Irishgenealogy.ie and looked for the death of John Bloomer and I found one that died and it is registered in Cavan town and its environs, however the image is not available so I am unable to ascertain if it is him or not, so it would be worth your while to purchase a copy, in order to rule him in or out.
Name JOHN BLOOMER Date of Death 1873 Group Registration IDN/RSR District/Reg Area Cavan Deceased Age at Death 52 Returns Year 1873 Returns Quarter 1Returns Volume No3 Returns Page No 67
Photocopies or official certificates can be obtained via the following link.
I also looked at https://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie for any wills, but I could find none. I looked up Griffiths valuation at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ and it shows John in 1856 renting land from Mr. Reburn in Latteriff. In 1827, there are 2 John Bloomers found in the Tithe applotments http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie one in Cullies (also called Drumhillagh) and the other in Knocknashammer, neither townlands are too far apart. Griffiths and Tithe Applotments are both land records, which just tell us where they are is in occupation for those years.
With regard to Thomas Fox/Faux, in the 1901 & 1911 Census, there is a Thomas with his wife Letitia and Canning nephews in Kilcrossduff, this family had no children and it would look like their nephews were assisting them with the farm and most likely they would inherit this farm from them. Again I found a death for Thomas Fox/Faux without image, so you might decide to get a copy of same. Look for deaths in Bailieborough area, it covers the Shercock area, though Cavan & Monaghan town has hospitals and sometimes people ended their days in hospital. Here is Thomas & Letitia marriage details Party 1 NameTHOMAS FOX Party 2 Name LETITIA PEPPER Date of Event 30 April 1879 Group Registration ID2653871 SR District/Reg Area Cootehill, Thomas was a brother of Elizabeth Bloomer and most likely Thomas Senior was still alive in 1879.
It might be worthwhile taking out a subscription with https://www.irishnewsarchive.com look up The Anglo Celt & Meath Chronicle and you might find more details regarding their family ie. sale of land, deaths etc. I have found in my own family that deaths that were not registered were mentioned in the local newspapers by way of passing sympathy to extended family members etc.
I may have more information but alas I am renovating my home and I dont have access to my books etc. Also look at the Flax Growers List for Co. Cavan at https://www.failteromhat.com/flax/cavan.php on this you will see that there are 3 Bloomer men in 1796 in Killann, this place would be close to all the previous places mentioned. You may also wish to take out a subscription with Roots Ireland and see what is available there, I did a quick look up but did not find much more than above.
Please let me know how you get on. Regards & best wishes Carmel O'Callaghan

Oh Carmel!
I can't thank you enough for your research and reply! I'm indeed most grateful. I will carefully sift through the information and yes, will follow your suggestions re the documents for purchase - that may be the best course of action (especially since I can't currently travel). One day, however I will return to the UK - the next trip is all about family history...and I am aiming to visit key places. Cavan is firmly on the list.
Heartfelt thanks again!
All my very best, from Amanda in Hobart, Australia! :-)

The Enniskillen Chronicle and Erne Packet of 17th March 1831 has a list of people who had applied to the Magistrates court at Ballyconnell for registration of their freehold. The list includes James Bloomer & John Bloomer both of Cullies, Co. Cavan.
Bloomer is a tricky name to search on newspaper sites because inevitably it brings up hundreds of occasions when the word is used meaning an error.

Thank-you Elwyn,
For assisting with the query. I must look at that list myself.

Thank you all!
I'm still working through the leads and while I still haven't uncovered the details (yet) that I'm looking for, I have found an error in my research that was important, so thank you!
At the moment I'm focussing on Thomas Fox (born c1814) who married Mary Grimes (born c 1813 in Shercock). These two are elusive. I haven't been able to verify their death dates. If it helps, I *think* Mary is the daughter of Mary Miller (born c 1782) and someone Grimes (born c 1780)... I've found some references that suggest they may have moved to England, but I find it hard to believe and am more inclined to believe they stayed in the local area (though of course I could be wrong!)...
Thomas and Mary are the parents of Elizabeth Fox, who married Edward Bloomer.
If anyone can throw any light on these two that could help me verify their identities, it would be beyond awesome.
As always, much appreciation coming from Hobart, Australia!
Cheers,
Amanda :-)

I recently came across info re Bloomer family from Knochbride Co Cavan on this interesting website blog - https://alexanderbloomer.blogspot.com/2019/09/a-niall-y-dna-lineage-of-…
This would appear to suggest a link to O'Reilly ancestors of the Bloomer family you are trying to trace.
I came across this recently as I was following up on a Y DNA match between myself and the author of the website blogs. This match indicated a common ancestor (approx 10 generations) of myself and the Bloomer/O'Reilly family.
Hope this of interest, regrds

Oh wow! Thank you Hugh! This is extremely exciting! I'm off to check out the website...and if it turns out to be the same family, we could be distant cousins from way back!
Thanks again for sharing the site - seriously appreciate it!
