Does anyone have any details about the Mullen Family from Bohalas. I have details of Thady Mullen marrying Anne Costello in the Casthemore and KIlcolman Catholic Parish Registers for 26 Jan 1856. These would be my great-great grandparents.  I  cannot find any civil record of the marriage nor birth or death records for either party, I have found a record for a Bridget Mullen at Bohalas in Griffiths Valuation and I am making a guess this person is the mother of Thady. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

    Thady died June 14 1880.  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1880/06473/4861932.pdf

Anne died February 4 1910 see last record. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1910/05417/4513807.pdf

    Anne in 1901 census. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003843265/

Did Thady and Anne have a son Patrick? Found this record in 1901 census in Bohalas http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003843264/

Civil registration of RC marriages started in 1864.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found records for four children: Brigid C 1859 Mary 1864 Catherine 1869 Thady 1866 So maybe the Patrick in the census is a different family.

I forgot to mention that baptismal records won't be available. Baptismal records for Ballaghaderreen RC parish start in 1851.

  • Thanks Roger this information is really helpful. I am curious however that the 1901 Census suggests that Anne Mullin was 76 and yet the death cert say she was only 77 when she died in 1910. Also, I am unsure of the identity of the daughter-in-law Bridget Mullen who reported the death.

Patrick is actually my great grandfather. I have always presumed that Brigid C 1859 Mary 1864 Catherine 1869 Thady 1866 were his siblings. I therefore don’t know why he wouldn’t be recorded on the Roots Ireland records. Do you have any ideas? I have managed to find birth records of all but Patrick and am now wondering if they are cousins rather than siblings.

Age discrepancies between census records and civil records are common. Maybe the informant did not have a good idea of her age or maybe she made herself older in 1901.

The records on Roots Ireland are transcriptions from parish registers. Sometimes a record was not legible enough to be transcribed. Sometimes there were small gaps in parish records. I have spent many hours reviewing the Ballaghaderreen parish register and the records go back and forth and many are out of order so anything is possible with Patrick's record.

I was looking into your question about Bridget Mullen the daughter in law who was shown as the informant on Anne's death.

I tried to search for a male Mullen marriage with a father Thady who married a Bridget. The only male marriage was Patrick.

I did find the marriage for Bridget to Andrew Quinn from Bohalas which is below.

  • Thanks once again Roger. I was aware of the daughter Bridget marrying Andrew Quinn.  Presumably,  she would have identified herself as Quinn if she was the informant of her mother's death. I have found an entry (bottom of p38)  in the Ballaghaderreen parish records from 1856 of a Malachy Mullen son of Thady and Anne with a Bridget Mullin as godmother.

I'm presuming it's the same family but I cannot find a civil record of the birth for Castlerea to corroborate this. Is possible it could be registered elsewhere? Curiously, I cannot find a civil record of the entry immediately above (Michael Gurrin) and on the same date,  which has similar parents/godparents.  Are there gaps in the civil records?

Have the Ballaghadereen parish records been transcribed? I found the one above just by doing a visual scan so I suppose it's possible that there are others too?

    Best wishes,

    Kevan

The Ballaghaderreen RC records have been transcribed and are on vaious subscription sites: Roots Ireland, Find My Past and Ancestry.

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so an 1856 birth would not have a civil record.

  • Thanks once again Roger. I am a member of Ancestry but the Malachy Mullen record wasn't a suggestion, I found it by chance. I'll have another look.
