John Sheehan born 6 March 1843 in Schull East, Cork married Catherine McDonnell born  1 July 1851 in Colleras, Goleen, Cork on 1 March, 1870. Their first childr, Mary, was born in Kilbrogane on 3 December, 1870. By 1873, they were in Wales, where Timothey, William, Anna Gertrude, and Catherine Agnes were born.  The family moved to Buffalo, NY, USA between 1882 and 1884 and there they had John, James, and Joan (Josephine).

I am searching for further ties to Kilbrogane, possibly his father, or his wife's family of McDonnells.

  • I have bee asked by Jane Halloran of IrelandXO to respond  to your query. I was doubtful if it was in an area where I am most experienced when I saw Kilbrogan on it as Kilbrogan is in Bandon.

I found the marriage in Civil Records of John Sheehan & Catherine "DONNELL" on 01 March 1870 in Schull Parish Church. The mis-naming of McDonnell to Donnell and Donnell to McDonnell was quite common in those years and many people of the era were illiterate and consequently could not contradict the Clergyman a would possibly be afraid to do so anyway if they did see an error. I will attach a copy of the Civil Record and a Snip of the Church Record of the marriage below.

As per your message, their daughter Mary was born on 03 Dec 1870n at Kilbronogue.

John Sheehan was the son of John Sheehan of Cooradarrigan Schull and Catherine was the daughter of Patrick Donnell of KILBRONOGUE Schull. This is the correct place for Catherine's birth and not Kilbrogan. This is borne out by the fact that she and John were married in the Parish of her Birth, Schull

There are three possible births of a John Sheehan to a John Sheehan between 1840 & 1850 and one Catherine Donnell neither of whom have detail of address. They are,

John Sheehan of John Sheehan & Mary Fitzgerald 06 Mar 1842

John Sheehan of ohn Sheehan & Catherine Leary 08 Aug 1841

John Sheehan of John Sheehan & Julia Sullivan 02 Sep 1844

As far as I can acertain from the records, Catherine was baptised 07 Feb1843. and was the daughter of Patrick Donnell and Honora Mahony.

The data outlined above is available on irishgenealogy.ie by names and datesand using schull as location

If you have any thoughts on the John Sheehan through family lore etc, you might let me know and I may be able to find other info on them.

Wishing you the best of health in these uncertain times.

  • Hi Frank!  Thanks so much for this exciting new information.  Family history had the Sheehan McDonnel family from Goleen.  I know Kate McDonnell's family owned a house there and I've been in touch with a second cousin who lived there.  So the Kilbronogue and Cooradarrigan sites open new areas of inquiry for me.

John Sheehan of John Sheehan & Mary Fitzgerald 06 Mar 1842 is my ancestor., confirmed by parents on his death cirtificate.in Buffalo, NY in 1910.

I also find a John Sheehan age 81 in the 1901 census in Cloganacullen, Goleen, Cork with wife Nora, age 76 and son Patrick, age 33 and daughter-in-law Mary and three children

I would appreciate any guidance you can provide as to where to look for further information about this family.

    THANKS

    Dorothy Shannon

  • Hi Dorothy,

Sorry for delay in reply but I have been very busy with modern day family matters these past few weeks and they have taken up all of my spare time dedicated to genealogy..

The best advice I can give to you is to use www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a free site with a good search engine and has both church and Civil Records for the area.. Explore every possible spelling and  initially use only the surname you are seeking and then try to pick out possible first names from results. use ten years + / - the expected year of birth/baptism/marriage in Church records which generally begin in most areas in the very early 1800s and in the case of Civil Records from 1860s.

If you have a problem you need help with, you can post here or contact me directly on franmkfahy054@gmail.com

    Wishing you success

    Stay safe & well
