  • Hello Philrmoon,

I am afraid that you will need to find some more specific information about your Michael Sullivan before you can trace him in the Irish records. There are hundreds of Michael Sullivans in the Cork area in the 1860s.  You will need a townland or parish name to even get started. I suggest obtaining all the transcripts of his existence in Glamorgan. His marriage cert may have his father's name. Go back through any correspondence to see if you can pin down where he was born in Ireland and where he was baptised.

When I began to trace my family I began with just as little information as you have, but by  keeping alert, interrogating elderly family members and just plain luck I have been able to find out quite a bit.

If you'd like to see how many Michael Sullivans there are, go to Irishgenealogy.ie and put in his name.

    Good luck in your research

  • Hi Geraldine

    Thanks for your reply

Unfortunately the only living related person to the Sullivan family is my cousin who is over 80 years old and in poor health

On record I do have is Michael Sullivan's son john Sullivan's marriage certificate in 1906 in dowlais merthyr tydfil glamorgan to mary Ann jarrett, where it states father Michael Sullivan deceased at the time of the marriage
John ( sometimes known as William) Sullivan born about 1883/ 86 in dowlais merthyr tydfil glamorgan
And they were living in the pennyderren district of merthyr tydfil glamorgan
And some cousins were living close by who came over from Ireland at the time of the famine who were named McCarthy's

    Sorry

    Regards Phil
