My great-grandmother was Ellen Mullane, daughter of Daniel Mullane and Johanna Cregan. She emigrated about 1865 and in 1876 married Michael Ahern from possibly Minagay in Chicago, Illinois, where a large number of Limerick people settled. Michael has emigrated in 1863 and had enklisted in the 63rd New York Infantry shortly afterward. Within six weeks he was wounded and lost his arm above the elbow, spending the remainder of his service in hospitals.. The Aherns became O'Hearns in the US. they had five children, tghree boys and two daughters. Their eldest son became a priest in Chicago. Michael died in 1905 and Ellen in 1929.
Ellen's sister, Margaret Mullane Wall (Mrs. John) also emigrated to Chicago in about 1880. Michael's sister Margaret Ahern Flynn (Mrs. William) and their children preceded him in locating in Chicago. By 1870 Michael and his younger brother Patrick were living there with the Flynns. In 1876 Patrick married a Mullane - Deborah, daughter of Michael Mullane and Ellen Hartnett of Limerick.
Another of Ellen's sister, Catherine, married Daniel Casey in Limerick. Two of their daughters, Ann and Catherine, emigrated in the mid-1880s, settling in Chicago. Both married: Catherine to John T. Sullivan from Limerick, and Ann to a widowed German farmer from Indiana.
Many Mullanes in Chicago, mostly hidden under their married names!

Hello Kathy, my name is Jennifer Jean and I am your local volunteer to follow your enquiry. I am so sorry that I did not notice your message until this evening but I will give you a little bit of good news before I even investigate your family. That is that our postlady happens to be a Mullanes and hails from Killeedy too.
Please do not over excited by this though just yet because I am also investigating the family for her too; the Mullanes spread from Killeedy to Monagea to Newcastle West and beyond. There is a few readable burial stones in St.Ita's Abbey cemetary and I am studying these almost as I write this. The rain has stopped investigations at present - it is pretty awful at this time however, please be patient for a couple of weeks and I will come back to you, with some points of interest. Hi Kathy, your ancestors seem to be DNA matches of mine on Ancestry. I am trying to tie down the connection. I know one of my grand aunts x 1 married a Mullane. All my Dad's ancestors are from Killeedy parish. If you are on Ancestry I have an extensive tree on there.

I am on ancestry.com although I have not posted my full tree there since I began it in the 1990s - before ancestry was begun. The Limerick Heritage Centre was able to locate my Mullanes in Ballintober East, Killeedy, a tiny place.
My Aherns were from Monogay, but the name "Michael" is too common to determine an exact family.
I have recently submitted DNA and came up with 24K+ matches of one degree or another. What is the name of your tree?
