Edward was my 2 x gt grandfather and I think that maybe his surname was shortened or Anglicised to be Sheen? He was a Roman Catholic and migrated to London, England with siblings, Daniel b 1811 and possibly Michael, Catharina and Jacob or Jacobi.

Edward married  Elizabeth Powers who was C of E 23 Aug 1825 at Lewisham and they had 11 children born in and around that area of London. When Edward passed away, he was buried in the RC section 25/3/1874 of Brockley cemetery, Elizabeth passed away later and was buried  24/2/1891 in Greenwich cemetery.

Their earlier 4 children were baptised at Our LadyeStar of the Sea in Greenwich with godparents: Gulielmus Murphy and Elizabeth for Catherina Boyle, who was absent; Michael Burn and Catharina Sheen;  Daniel Sheen and Maria Magennis; Joannes Courtney and Maria Anna Courtney. So it seems that some of Edward's siblings were godparents.

Are there any baptism records for Edward and his siblings in Kinsale or nearby parishes?

  • The church records for the Kinsale area are freely available at this link: https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/search.jsp?name2f…

You could search these records for Edward and Daniel that have the same parents.

  • Hi Kieran,

Thank you for the connection to these pages which are quite informative. However, I feel as though I'm looking for needles in a haystack! The surname Sheen doesn't seem to appear and I looked through the marriages too. Maybe Sheen was a derivation of Shehan,  Sheehan, Sheehy, Shine or Shea of which there are several marriages in the Cork area. The only thing that Edward specified was that he was born in Kinsale and his birth year changed through various censuses; as he married in 1825 I guess his birth would've been 1806-1808 and if his parents were still in Kinsale nobody would have known if he was younger than the age of consent? He was a tanner by trade so maybe it was his father's trade too?

Witnesses at his wedding were Daniel Sheen and Catherine Boyce who also appear at some of his children's baptisms as godparents, as does  Gulielmus Murphy, Michael Burn and Catharina Sheen (were they a couple?), Maria Magennis, Joannes Courtney and Maria Anna Courtney-another couple? the early children born 1826-1840 were baptised as RC at Our Ladye Star of the Sea in Greenwich but the later ones weren't.
