I am looking for any information on my Great-Great Grandfather, Bernard McLinden (may have been McAlinden). He was born in Barnmeen, Co.down, Ireland in 1857 or 58. I believe his Father's name was Hugh and his Mother's name was Mary or Margaret McConville. Some of his known siblings were; Patrick, Margaret, Elizabeth, James, Hugh , and MaryAnn.

Bernard immigrated to Chicago, IL around 1871-75 and married Annie Murray. They had 4 boys (John, Ed, Hugh, & Murt), and 4 girls (Mary, Catherine, Anna, & Margaret).

Any information is greatly appreciated.

  • Dee7,

I think there were several McAlinden=McConville couples in that area all having children at the same time, and so care needs to be taken to separate the families. (Hugh & Margaret married 22.9.1853 but I can’t see Hugh & Mary’s marriage).

Here’s a birth for Elizabeth McAlindin on 4th April 1864 to Hugh McAlindin & Margaret McConville. They lived in Drumgreenan. That Hugh was a weaver.

Here’s a birth for James McAlindon on 12th May 1864 to Hugh McAlindon and Mary McConville of Barnmeen. He was a farmer.

Griffiths Valuation lists 2 Hugh McLindens in Barnmeen in 1864.  One (nickname Patrick) had plot 10 a 5 acre farm. The other (Daniel) had plot 12 which was 9 acres. Plot 8 (5 acres) was also leased by one of them and a Rose McConville (probably a widow) had a house & small garden on it.

One of the Hughs in Barnmeen died in 1876:

There were about 7 McAlindon households in Barnmeen in 1901, so it’ll take a bit of research working out which is which:

You can follow the tenants forward from Griffiths by using the Valuation Revision records on PRONI’s website. They record changes up to about 1930.  Some probate abstracts from the PRONI wills site:

The Will of Hugh M'Alinden late of Barnmeen County Down Farmer deceased who died 26 October 1882 at same place was proved at Belfast by John Lennon of Drumgreenagh and Michael Campbell of Lurgancahone both in said County Farmers the Executors. (The above will is on-line at PRONI and names his wife as Elizabeth Ann).

The Will (with one Codicil) of John M'Alinden late of Barnmeen County Down Farmer deceased who died 21 February 1883 at same place was proved at Belfast by Thomas Fegan of Barnmeen and Daniel Fegan of Drumgreenagh in said County Farmers the Executors.

McAlinden Denis of Barnmeen county Down farmer died 18 June 1926 Probate Belfast 11 July to Edward Keenan farmer and John McEvoy tailor. Effects £16 10s.

The family is on several trees on Ancestry. If you haven’t already checked there you might get some information. A word of caution though, not all trees on Ancestry are accurate. One with your family has 2 children born in Ireland in 1868, just 5 months apart, and 2 in 1864 one month apart.  So that’s obviously wrong. I suspect that same tree contains children from at least one of the other McAlinden/McConville couples in the same area. (I can see at least 4 McAlinden=McConville families in that general area in the mid 1800s.  So check each event carefully to make sure it relates to your family).
