I am new to this site and I have searched for many years trying to find out information about my great grandfather John McTague. He was born about 1845 and immigrated to North America around 1860 or after. His death certificate said his father's name was Patrick and did not include a mother's name. Family tradition said he travelled across Canada to Montana. Glendale, Montana is the first place I have found any record of him. His death certificate said he came from Dublin. He was a horseman. His signature was quite beautiful and he clearly raised the c and underlined it or put two dots under it. I am at a loss and wonder if anyone could give me some suggestions as to where to look for information about his birth. Unfortunately, it is not physically possible for me to travel to Ireland. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hello there,
I have found birth certificates for a McTague family in Balbriggan, Dublin on RootsIreland.ie (a paid subscription site). The parents, Michael and Jane (nee Grimes) had several children in the 1840s, one of them being a John McTague. According to his birth certificate, he was born in 1847 and was Roman Catholic.
I cannot be sure that these are the McTagues you are looking for, as the fathers name differs from the one you have. However, it may be a lead for you? Knowing the parish/area of the family and their religion can be very helpful in these searches, as many birth certificates can be found through the parish.
Also, to note as you mentioned you are new on the site, there is an option on this site to "add an ancestor" so you can add your great-grandad if you would like. This might help others who may be connected find you.
Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance, or if there is any more information that may help in the search.
I wish you luck!

Hi, Billy,
Thank you ever so much for your reply to my post. I am hoping this is my great grand father! Is it possible to determine if John McTague emigrated to Canada or the USA? Is it also possible to discover his sibblings names without joining the website? Or do you think I should join the website? I will figure out how to add my great grandfather to this website.
Thank you again,
Colleen
