"HUEY" from Moneymore

This is the only Huey family I can see in that area of Co Londonderry in the 1901 census.  Are they related to you? Some additional information on who you are looking for would be helpful.

The Nancy Huey listed in that Census was the sister of my grandfather, Daniel Huey from Townland Clare, Parish Kildress, Tyrone.  She was the daughter of David Huey and Nancy Steele < my grandfather's parents.

There are family records that say that Nancy and her husband John, were cousins.

John's father George Huey (m. to Jane Hughes) was born around 1795 and died in November 1880, in Moneymore (I have death registration).

I am trying to find out more about George - and particularly to see if he was the brother of my G-grandfather David, which means finding a common father, thus confirming the "Nancy and John were cousins" story.

I've been at this since the 1980's, and have visited Moneymore five or six times - but as yet, no luck.

I'm now trying to follow up some possible DNA connections. I have all of the descendants of George, and David, recorded (the report runs to about 110 A4 pages!!

John’s father George was married to Jane and she died in 1887:

If George was from Kildress, he probably attended Orritor Presbyterian church.  He looks to have married in the 1820s or early 1830s. Orritor has baptism records from 1831 and marriages from 1827. The only copy is held by the Minister. You could contact him/her to ask for a search of those records. If the events you need are before those years, then there probably are no records to search.

The 1911 census tells us John & Nancy only had the one child – George. Here’s their marriage:

John died intestate in 1916:

Administration of the Estate of John Huey late of Moneymore County Londonderry Farmer who died 25 November 1916 granted at Londonderry to George Huey Farmer.

George looks to have married in 1914:

George died intestate in 1950:

Huey otherwise Hoey George of Smith Street Moneymore county Londonderry retired postman died 4 November 1950 at Mid Ulster Hospital Magherafelt county Londonderry Administration Belfast 2 May to Emily Huey the widow. Effects £1397 1s. 11d.

Emily died in 1958:

Huey Emily of Smith Street Moneymore county Londonderry widow died 9 February 1958 Probate Londonderry 6 May to Annie Greer widow. Effects £1189 1s. 7d.

David Huey (Nancy’s brother) died in April 193 and the death is reported in the mid Ulster Mail for 19.4.1913. He was from Clare, Cookstown and had lived with his sister for some years. Described as a general favourite in the community, great regret was expressed at his sudden demise.

Mid Ulster Mail of 15th April 1911 carried an item about the clerk to the local Rural District Council proposing to give a boy, Norman Penny, to John Huey for adoption. John explained that he already had a son and was just looking to hire a worker on the farm for £2 a year and clothes. The Board declined to approve the arrangement. (Presumably because they were looking for a permanent home for the boy, not just a job).

Irish News & Belfast Morning News of 12th June 1903 carries a report on the recent meeting of Magherafelt Board of Guardians. It detailed the arrangements for hiring boys out to work locally. “Thomas Collins aged 14, who was hired with John Huey, Moneymore, also had a good home, and was well clothed and treated. They understood that this boy was obliged to enter into his situation wearing the workhouse clothes, and they consider that when sending out children to situations in future the guardians would do well to provide them with an outfit of ordinary clothing, instead of obliging them to start life in a locality where they were otherwise unknown with a distinctive dress, which at once marked their origin.”

Mid Ulster Mail of 2nd August 1947 advertises a 250cc motor bike for sale. Owner was W G Huey, Moneymore.

I see many more similar adverts from the Moneymore family.

The censuses tell us that John Hoey was born in Co Derry (not Tyrone) so possibly baptise din Moneymore. Moneymore 1st Presbyterian has baptism & marriage records from 1827; the second has no records before 1845 and Saltersland has baptisms from 1848 and marriages from 1845. Copies of the baptisms are in PRONI. There are no Hueys in Moneymore in the 1831 census so presumably the family established themselves there just after that.

The Clare family get mentioned in the Northern Whig of 8th Sept 1882 where they won a load of prizes at the local show for onions, preserves etc etc. T W Huey got second prize for the neatest and cleanest cottage & garden. And so on.  There are many more similar mentions of the family (in 1913 they were advertising eggs for sale).
