Greetings,
My aging mother, in her 80's, asked me to compile a record of her/our ancestry. I have finally made the connection for her to Winfred Halloran, my 2X Great Grandmother after several months of searching. She, Winfred, was born 1 May 1835 to her father Domnick Halloran and Bridget McNalty in the Parish of Kilmoremoy.
Her history is:
1. She immagrated to the USA through Liverpool to New Orleans in 1851/1852.
2. Married Patrick Carroll in St. Louis Missouri.
The next several generations lived, worked and died in Lexington Missouri. She pasted in 1928.
One of the interesting parts of the search was my Grandma Maggie (Winfred was Maggie's Grandmother) always told me these two things; "We come from the County Mayo" and for whatever reason "Carroll was always spelled with 2 R's and 2 L's". Not sure what the second phrase is all about.
My querry is this; How would I find out where some of my ancestors lived to perhaps get some pictures for my mother?
Additionally, are there any Halloran's kicking about Kilmoremoy?
Regards,
Keith

Hi Keith,
Are you sure the Hallorans were not from Co. Sligo? These names appear in Griffith’s Valuation (mid-1800s) for Sligo:
Halloran Cecily Bunree Kilmoremoy Sligo
HALLORAN DOMINICK CARROWCUSHLAUN KILMOREMOY SLIGO
HALLORAN DOMINICK CLOONSLAUN KILMOREMOY SLIGO
Halloran James Cloonslaun Kilmoremoy Sligo
Halloran Patrick Bunree Kilmoremoy Sligo
Halloran Timothy Carrowcushlaun Kilmoremoy Sligo
Halloran Timothy Cloonslaun Kilmoremoy Sligo
There were also McNultys living in the same townland as one of the Dominics:
Mc Nulty Anthony Ardnaree, or Shanaghy Kilmoremoy Sligo
Mc Nulty Bridget Abbey Street Kilmoremoy Sligo
Mc Nulty John Bunree Kilmoremoy Sligo
MC NULTY JOHN CARROWCUSHLAUN KILMOREMOY SLIGO
Mc Nulty Marcus Crocketstown Kilmoremoy Sligo
Mc Nulty Martin Church Street Kilmoremoy Sligo
MC NULTY PATRICK CARROWCUSHLAUN KILMOREMOY SLIGO
Mc Nulty Thomas Rathkip Kilmoremoy Sligo
Mc Nulty William Rathkip Kilmoremoy Sligo
There were NO Hallorans and two McNultys in Kilmoremoy, Mayo:
MC NULTY JOHN MILL STREET KILMOREMOY MAYO
MC NULTY PATRICK KING STREET KILMOREMOY MAYOPatricia

Patricia,
It could have been. This is the entry I found:
Catholic Parish Register at NLI, Microfilm 04231/04 Parish of Kilmoremoy, County of Mayo / Sligo, Diocese of Killala, Baptisms 01 May 1823 to 14 OCT 1836. Entry of birth for Winfred Halloran #10566 Born: 01 May 1835 Christened: 06 May 1835: Father Domnick Halloran Mother: Bridget McNalty.
As stated I am really unsure of the geography and place names. Since it is Mayo / Sligo, I would go with Sligo. Thanks for the assistance.
Are Griffith’s Valuation (mid-1800s) for Sligo the tax records or probate?
This is the family life of record that I have put together thus far down to me:
- Winfred Halloran's birth in Ireland 1835.
- Winefred Haloran immigration to USA From Ireland in 1852 (No copy but I can pay for one))

- Census 1860 Lexington, Missouri: Patrick Carroll and Winefred Haloran (Great Great Grandparents)
- Census 1870 Lexington, Missouri: Patrick Carroll and Winefred Haloran (Great Great Grandparents) and John Joseph Carroll (Great Grandfather)
- Census 1880 Lexington, Missouri: Patrick Carroll and Winefred Haloran (Great Great Grandparents) and John Joseph Carroll (Great Grandfather)
- Note: Census 1890 destroyed in fire

- Census 1940 Moss Point, Mississippi: Clarence Jernigan (Grandfather), Margaret Carroll-Jernigan (Grandmother) and Mary Kate Jernigan-Gregg (Mother)
- Donald Gregg and Mary Kate Jernigan Marriage Mobile, Alabama (Certified copy)
- Birth certificate Keith Gregg Lemoore, California (Certified Copy)
- Keith Gregg and Judith Slowik marriage Illinois 1985
- Death of Margaret Carroll-Jernigan 1998
The reference to Mayo might be for the Carroll side. As I do more research I find some of the family oral history is off. Same as the Carroll spelling statement.
As some families travelled together, the Argo out of Liverpool, arrived 1851-12-31 in New Orleans with other Hallorans. Besides Winny (Winfred) Halloran 15YO, was Honora (18), Judy (18) and Thomas (21). Thomas I am pretty sure he, Thomas, is related becuase he shows up with in a birth in Lexington and Winfred is a sponsor.
One interesting note is I just received this from the Sisters of Charity:
Sister Mary Andrea Carroll was born Winifred Carroll on 12/21/1862 in Lexington, Missouri. Her parents were Patrick Carroll and Winifred Halleron-Carroll. She entered the Community 1/04/1890, took temporary vows 3/19/1892, and took final vows 7/1/1915. She taught at Sacred Heart School, Topeka, KS. And St. Mary’s School, Butte, MT. She passed away 3/19/1926 of Influenza in Providence Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas and was buried in the cemetery at the Mother House in Leavenworth.
Again Thanks for all the assistance,
Regards,
Keith

Friends,
To add more to the mix I found this today. Domnick could also go by Dennis Halloran. Bridget is pretty steady in the use of her name.

And these.....
It forms the McNalty (McEnalty) relation. (Why the "E"?) I highlighted the old map but it looks to be a parking lot now on Google maps. Too bad.

Keith,
Apparently Kilmoremoy Civil Parish is primarely in Tirawley Barony, County Mayo; however, a small portion is part of Tyreragh Barony in County Sligo. This info comes from http://sites.rootsweb.com/~irlmayo2/kilmoremoy_cp_characteristics.html
Also "Townlands were transferred from County Sligo's Tireragh Barony to Kilmoremoy after 1898," so this may explain the Mayo-Sligo confusion.Patricia

Hey everyone,
My son analyzed his DNA with 23 and me, The result was my son's DNA line comes primarily from County Mayo in Ireland, I thought it was neat. Grandma Maggie was spot on.
