I've been researching my 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Barry.  My Dad said he was from the Village of Ballyhale.  Thomas was married to Mary Aide. Here's what I have been able to find.   Son Edward Barry was baptized at Ballyhale Catholic Church 11 Feb 1840.  It said the family lived in Moanroe (Commons).  Daughter Mary baptized 2 May 1843 also Ballyhale Catholic Church.  I know that baptismal records prior to 1823 and no marriage records from Ballyhale have survived.  Thomas Barry is in the House books in Moanroe Commons in 1845, but not in 1848.  Thomas and his family are in Evans, Erie County, New York in the 1855 state census and is says they have lived in the same place for 5 years.  Thomas died 22 Mar 1875 at age 63 or 65, it's hard to read the age.  Mary died 12 Sep 1874 at age 65.  Both are reported in death report for Evans of the 1875 New York State census.  That would have Thomas born in 1810 or 1812.

I have been searching Thomas Barrys in Kilkenny near Knocktopher civil parish.  There is a baptism at Thomastown Catholic Church 19 Nov 1812 that could be him, so I've been researching that family.  I have a DNA match to a Barry family who lived in Sugarstown, Kilfane, which is what made me look more closely at Thomastown Catholic Church records.

There is a Thomas Barry in Knocktopher parish on the 1831 Tithe Defaulters list, but I don't know if this is my 2nd great grandfather or not.  He would have been 19 or 21 at the time.  I don't know how old a man was to be on the Tithe Applotment list.  I cannot find any Thomas Barry in Knocktopher on the Tithe Applotment list.

Based on my Dad's notes, and I'll add all of his notes have been correct so far, I wonder if my 2nd great grandfather was born, and grew up in the Ballyhale or Moanroe Commons area.  He could have been baptized and married at the Ballyhale Catholic Church. If that were the case I won't be able to find those records.  When we get to much warmer weather I would love it if someone could look in the graveyard at the church and let me know if there are any Barry gravestones. The Catholic Church in Ballyhale is not on the Historic graves listing. I know that Ballyhale and Moanroe Commons are the first places I want to visit once we can travel again and I can get to Ireland.

Thank you,

Patricia Barry Coleman

  • Dear Bernie and Mary,

Thank you so very much!!  I've very excited to see what you have found. What would be the best way for you to share the information with me?  If it's not something that would work on your blog, do you want to put it in Dropbox and invite me to get it there?  Or send it to me by email? Please let me know what would work best for you.

I'm in the process of writing up the other information on Thomas Barrys that I've found from various online records for my blog: https://patriciacolemangenealogy.com/   I've already written a big about my 2nd great grandfather there.

    Best regards,

    Patricia

  • Whichever is better for you.  My email is pbcoleman529@gmail.com if you prefer that instead of adding it to your blog.

Finding an Ade grave is just as exciting to me.  I've not been able to trace her parents either.  Having another familymember's name should be helpful.

    Thank you again,

    Patricia

  • Dear Eamon,

Thank you so much! I heard from Bernie and Mary and got 9 emails with details of Barry and Ade tombstones around Kilkenny.  This was just wonderful information to receive.I was able to identify many of the Barrys from my digging in parish baptisms, Griffiths Valuation and civil records.  This was a great help to my research!!  Thank you again for all your help.
