Hi all,

I'm looking for some ancestors of mine who migrated to Australia. James (b.1814, Dublin) and Ann (b 1824, nee. Doherty) Stone came to Australia in 1856 with their sons James Stone and Patrick Stone. They had 4 more children here; James died 1899 and Ann died 1901.

I think Ann was born 1824 in Donegal, I think she married a man with the surname O'Donnell who presumably died before she married James Stone in Donegal around 1853. The son James Stone's (b. 1855, England) birth certificate says mother as Ann Stone, formerly Donegal, lately O'Donnell which is why I assume a first marriage for her.

I would love if anyone has any information on Ann Doherty/O'Donnel/Stone and her birth as well as her parents, I think her father was Cornelius Doherty but would love any help!

Finding records pre-1850 in Co. Donegal is very difficult. For whatever reason, the records were not retained. I did try a search on the subscription site Roots Ireland for an Ann Doherty marriage to an O'Donnell or Stone but there were no records pre 1856 in all of Ireland.

Have you considered DNA testing? Possibly you will have matches with indiviuals who have more information on your Donegal connections.

  • Hi Roger, thank you for your reply.

My father has done a DNA test through ancestry but we haven't had too much luck finding relatives linked through those relatives unfortunately!

Thanks for your help, it seems to be a bit of a dead end finding these people!
