I have been trying to trace my Father's mother who was born in Carrigh, Co. Limerick.  Her name was Agnes Bedelia Moore on her marriage and death certificates.  I don't have a birt or baptismal record.  She was possibly born circa 1872 and migrated to Australia (Brisbane) around 1890. She sister was Mary Ellen Moore born 11th August 1865 in Carrig, Clarina, Co. Limerick who also migrated to Australia. They probably travelled together but I cannot confirm from ship's passenger lists. Three of her brothers, James Moore (1862-1921), Stephen Moore (1867-1906) and Michael Moore (1869-1925?) migrated to the USA.  I have found birth details of most of the family except for Agnes Bedelia.  James Moore married Mary Walsh who also came from Co. Limerick in New York. Stephen Moore appears to have married Margaret T Ahern(e) in St Alphonsis Limerick before emigrating.

Another brother Patrick Moore (1859- after 1934) married Margaret Brinn, had a large family and remained in Ireland in Patrickswell.

There were also other sisters - Catherine (1856- ?) and Mary (1861-?). These may have died young and the latter's name used again for Mary Ellen Moore.

The parents of this family were James Moore (?<1835-1882) and Maria (Mary) Daly (~1832-1887) .  Mary Daly's parents may have been Thomas Daly and Brigida Sweeny.  I know nothing about James Moore's parents.

Families who seem to have been close to the Moores were the Walsh and Donovan families in that these were witnesses to various baptismal or marriage events.  Some of the Donovans migrated to the US and were in contact with the Moore brothers there.

My main question is whether there are any birth or baptismal records of Agnes Bedelia Moore? Possibly there are also descendents of the Moore in the County given that Patrick Moore had 10 children (4 boys) between 1883 and 1905.

Any information would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Jim,
This must be Agnes........7th entry.  It says Bridget.

  • This registry entry looks very positive.  The name "Agnes Bedelia" appears on a marriage certificate and death certificate.  Various letters that I have found have  always been addressed to Agnes (Watters). I had a suspician that Bedelia might have been a pet name or derivative of Bridget or Bride.

I believe that there was a 6th C saint St Bride or St Bridget who founded Ireland's first women's religious community. The puzzle was where the name "Agnes" came from.  However, the link to the registry entry looks positive as the parents are correct and the location consistent with my records.

Thanks for your help, I am much obliged. This has solved a gap I have struggled to fill for a decade.

    best wishes

  • Hi Jim, Agnes may have been her Confirmation name.

I have a few cousins that went by their Confirmation name and it was so confusing when I met then!

  • Thanks Margot, good point.   Couriously details of her siblings were easy to identify albeit some in Latin.
