  • Hi Kristine,

Our volunteer Shane has asked that I share the following information with you.

Peter Thomas Gavin c1797 Baltinglass - the early date is going to be a problem searching for definite details for this family, the Church of Ireland baptism records for the area only go back to 1877, and 1848 for marriages, and the Catholic baptism records go back to 1807, marriages from 1810, and some limited death/burials for 1824-1830. I checked the available RC and CofI records for the parish and found just one close mention close to the surname - a baptism of a Michael Mc Gavan in 1842.

I've come across the surname 'Tuttle' (brother Edward's middle name) in previous searches, and generally in connection with Church of Ireland families in county Wicklow. There are just three Gavins listed on the Tithe Applotment records (1831 & 1825) in County Wicklow, one in Rathdrum  (civil) parish further south in the county and two in Carriggower townland in Derrylossary parish, between Laragh and Roundwood. Baltinglass is located in the west of the county on the Kildare border and so not that close to either of these locations.

  • Hi Denise.  Thanks so much for the above information.  Peter, Edward and John Patrick all joined the British Army.  I believe based on army payroll records that their father Patrick Gavin also joined the British Army.   Peter joined the army in 1811 in Gibraltar. Edward and John Patrick were born in Nenagh, Tipperary and were also at the Hibernian Military School in Dublin as children before joining the army in 1818.  So I believe that all three brothers and their families were not in Ireland anymore after they left so the early dates do present some difficulties in finding any records.  I am currently trying to find out any more info that might be listed for Edward and John Patrick under the school, but haven't had any luck getting records yet as record copying is really busy right now at the National Archives in the UK.  I don't know if they kept copies of the schools records in Ireland at all?
