2nd Great grandfather immigrated to Canada early 1800,s to Ontario, Canada. His name was Mathew Griffith, Born in 1813 from Canadian census taken Jan 12 1852 he was 39 what I have determined so far, and was born in County Cavan. It would be great to find more information about his parents if possible. He married in Canada so am unable to use his wife for a source. https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-1-315220701-3-55/matthew-griffith-in-myheritage-family-trees

Hi Griff,
Getting back that far is difficult, though not impossible, there were some Griffiths that lived between Shercock & Cootehill. Did family ever join him after he emigrated to Canada, it might be easier to try and find people within the main Civil Registration timeline which is after 1864. You could use the free records on irishgenealogy.ie and on https://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie, this way you could gather up information on Griffith families and pinpoint the main areas they lived in, it would not be the most common name unlike Clarke. Look at naming patterns etc and you might be able to identify a particular name that continues up to to-day, also look at the Irish newspaper archives and Roots Ireland both subscription sites and you might strike gold. Also look at all the sites that covers grave transcriptions, this job is undertaken by volunteers, though with our lockdowns this work has come to a halt. If you can find your townland, it would be wonderful.
Best wishes Carmel O'Callaghan

I believe he had a brother Thomas that also emigrated to Canada and there also may have been a Joseph. He married in Canada a Martha Burd in 1839 who may have been from County Cavan as well so they may have been from the same local. I recentle came across a Mathew Griffith on Upper Canada Land Petitions of 1825 which says this person arrived in 1823 at the age of 21 so he would have been born in 1802 but I am having doubts that this is my Great, Great Grandfather becauce I have not found anything more on him.

I have copied and pasted this information from My Heritage, I believe all of their children would have been born in Ireland.

Hi Griff,
If any of them stayed in Ireland you would hope to find their deaths on irishgenealogy.ie and if they all died in the same townland, it would be indicative of the place your are looking for. Also look at the land records on Tithe Applotments and the wills all available on https://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie., there are also land records on https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ a land valuation overseen by Richard Griffiths.
