    Brian,

See attached two marriage records. One is for John Gregg and Ellen Sheehan and came from the subscription site rootsireland.ie and I located the other under Ellen Sheahan and John Grey on the free site irishgeanology.ie. I suspect they are both the same. I'm not suggesting your name should be Grey! I think the name was mis-transcribed in the record. As you will note, the ages are given as 20 and 21 in one of the records and Daniel is given as the father of John. I suspect that Daniel was alive at the time, as it is usually recorded if he was dead. Does this match with your records of John and Ellen in Mallow in 1901?

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Hi again Kieran, Looked for the Church record on the new National Library site, hoping to find address.

It was written in strange place in the middle of 1866 , but it was correct and as you had in attachment.

Looking at the civil record where the name enumerated as Grey it gave the  address as  Creggan  Twopothouse which is abiut 6 miles

from Mallow on the  main road to Limerick.     Very few Gregg,s or Grey,s in Co Cork in 1901 Census which you can access

at  www.census,nationalarchives.ie, It would make more sense to you.

I will search for birth for this couple on the orig register in Doneraile.

Let me know how you get on, and if you have any questions.

    Christina.

  • Hi Everyone, Sorry this will be long, but I tried to provide this information previously, but was unsuccessful.

KIERAN, yes those are my relatives, and yes they wrote the name Grey instead of Gregg on one of the marriage documents. These documents were the only link I have been able to locate to provide John's father as being Daniel; however I have never been able to find Daniel anywhere else in Mallow, Cork or even neighboring counties.

CHRISTINA, I don't have any census records attached to this family; however I remember seeing an index at some point that gave me a snippet of information that helped me put together a portion of this family. I do not believe it was the 1901 census though, and I am afraid that some of the kids had already left Ireland by 1901.

I checked the Griffith's Valuations and was not able to locate any of the Gregg family from my line. I believe the prominent name was Michael Gregg and he either was an attorney or worked for one, so his name appears a lot. I haven't been able to link him to my family.

Here is what I know of my Gregg family, primarily from searching in the national archives:

John Gregg was born about 1848 in Ireland, married Ellen Sheehan/Sheahan on 29 Jan 1867 in Cloyne Parish, Doneraile, Cork, and died in the Mallow Workhouse on 22 Mar 1921. He is shown as a widower, so the assumption is that Ellen Sheehan Gregg died before 1921, although I have never located proof. From the marriage certificate, we assume John's father was Daniel.

Ellen Sheehan was born about 1846 in Cork. Her parents were John Sheehan and Agnes Burke. I have no other information on them, but see that Sheehan people were baptismal sponsors or appeared in other ways with this family, but I haven't determined if they are Ellen's siblings or how they connect.

John & Ellen Gregg's kids were as follows:

John - b. Jun 1868 Doneraile and baptised 11 Jun 1868 Diocese of Cloyne. I know nothing more about him.

Johanna - b. 21 May 1870 Mallow and baptised 22 May 1870 Diocese of Cloyne. She immigrated to the US, and on 4 Mar 1906 married Michael Murphy in Manhattan NY.

Denis - b. 31 Aug 1872 Egmont, Mallow and baptised 1 Sep 1872 Siocese of Cloyne. He immigrated to New York on 30 Mar 1899.

Ellen "Nellie" - b. 17 Apr 1875 Egmont and baptised 18 Apr 1875 Diocese of Cloyne. She immigrated with Denis on 30 Mar 1899 and in 1907 marries Patrick Hartnett. They had 3 children, and Patrick, a blacksmith, died. Ellen and the kids lived in the same building as my grandmother in NY.

Catherine (Kate) - b. 26 Jan 1878 Creggane Townland, baptised 27 Jan 1878 in Liscarroll, Cork. Kate is listed as the "mother" on my grandfather's marriage certificate. We know that she  immigrated to the US, but haven't found concrete evidence of when, or what happened to her while in the US.

Edmund/Edward - this is my grandfather. He was born 12 Dec 1882 in Richardstown Townland and baptised 17 Dec 1882 Diocese of Cloyne. He immigrated the the US about 1909, and married my grandmother in 1914. On his immigration, he listed that he was coming to stay with his sister Kate...so she was already in the US.

Mary - b. Apr 1886 Doneraile and baptised 17 Apr 1886 Diocese of Cloyne. I know nothing more about her.

    ***********************************************

Edmund/Edward came to the US, where he is consistently listed as Edward. He married Isabella Ross Sim in December 1914, and 9 months later, my dad was born, but he was otherwise gone. The 1914 marriage record shows Edward's dad as John Gregg, and where it asks for his mom's maiden name, he provided the name Kate Gregg. This threw us for a loop for a long time...why would his mom have a surname of Gregg? It wasn't until I worked Edward's sister Ellen Gregg Hartnett's family that I saw a trend where when a parent died, they used a different relative in that parent's place. In NY, the state conducted a census midway between the US census years, so in 1915, Isabella Gregg is living with her brother and his family, but Edward Gregg is not there, and in September when my father was born, Edward's residence was not known. I was finally able to locate him registered in two different Alms Houses in NY in 1915, but his trail ends there. I don't know if he died and is buried in a paupers grave, or if he moved out of NY. My dad never met his father, and only knew he came from Cork.

I appreciate any and all help, and hope to be able to go a further with this family at some point.

  • Brian, you have managed to do great research with very little to go on.

Looking through notes I had made on the 1901 census some days ago.

Julia Gregg  aged 11 living with  Uncle James Twomey  farmer Woodfield Clonmoyle.

Mary Cagney  aged 20 living with aunt Eliz Gregg farmer  widow aged 80.

More material coming on line all the time, so hopefully something will turn up.

or perhaps someone else will see this post and reply.

    Regards Christina.
