I am seeking information regarding my 3x great-grandfather and grandmother, Hugh King (born 1805) and Margaret McCauley (born 1815). According to a biography of their son Michael, Hugh left County Cavan for America in 1842 and settled in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA. Margaret followed with their two sons Michael and Hugh in 1847.  A third son, Francis, was born in Pennsylvania prior to 1850 and the family is listed in the 1850 US Census in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. A fourth son, John was born prior to 1860 and by the time of the 1860 census Hugh is no longer listed with the family.

Michael and his brother Hugh moved to Des Moines, Iowa, USA and their mother and younger brothers followed sometime prior to 1866.

Michael and Hugh married sisters, Rose and Catherine Cassady whose parents had settled near the Irish Settlement outside Des Moines, Iowa.

I believe there were other McCauley relatives in Des Moines as there is a cousin, Thomas McCauley listed as a pallbearer in an obituary of Michael King's daughter Mary Francis.

I would like to find some record that could link Hugh King and Margaret McCauley to their families or a paraish in Ireland, but all I know is that they came from County Cavan. I have not been able to locate them on any ship lists either.

  • Hi,

Subscription site -  www.rootsireland.ie -  has a record of Anne King - Baptised February 1st 1840 in the parish of Templeport. Parents: Hugh King and Margaret McAuly. Address: Tullytransa.

The townland of Tullynastra is in the Barony of Tullyhaw, Civil parish of Templeport, Poor Law Union of Bawnboy, Co. Cavan. There is a foot note in relation to baptism date.

  • Hi,

Correction - Townland spelling - Ballytrasna - not as shown.

The records for Templeport are from 1836. No record found for or a marriage, or baptism of Michael and Hugh King.  The parish of Templeport appears to be south of Bawnboy in County Cavan. The baptism date for Anne King is based on the previous entry, as the 1st of February is not shown for her entry. The entries are in a mix of English and Latin

  • Hello, all.  I'm just discovering this King conversation.  I'm afraid I only have more questions, specifically this one:

Do any of you have an information on an Anne King, for in the 1840s-1850s time period in County Cavan?  Her father MAY have been a Hugh King.

Anne King is my great-grandmother.  She married a Cornelius Kennedy and raised some 11 children in Leitrim. Most, including my grandfather (also Cornelius) emigrated to the US or elsewhere in the late 19th century.

Any information, including connections to your own inquiries, would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • I have not been able to find any more information on Anne King in regards to Hugh King and Margaret McCauley.  Hugh's family is listed in the 1850 U. S. Census in Black Lick Twp, Indiana County, Pennsylvania and does not include a child named Anne. Michael King, the oldest son, left Pennsylvania and moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1856. His mother and brothers eventually followed. Margaret and all four of her sons are buried in Des Moines. There is a Cornelius Kennedy listed in the Des Moines City Directory in 1898. Do you know where your Cornelius Kennedy lived once he came to America?

  • Thank you for your correspondence!

My grandfather Cornelius Kennedy (b 1874) came to NYC and raised his family in Brooklyn.

I've recently learned that his mother, Anne (King) Kennedy married my  great-grandfather Cornelius (Con, Connor) Kennedy in 1865 in the RC chapel in Templeton, Cavan. I am trying to nail down her baptismal date. Her father was named Hugh and I believe she had a brother named Hugh as well and possibly a sister named Bridget. Townland appears to be Ballyleenan, Cavan.

  • This is very intrguing. Do you have any idea if the brother Hugh was older or younger than Anne?  Michael's brother Hugh was born in 1837. I wish I had more information for you or someone I could ask. Have you taken a DNA test?

  • You may wish to comb through these baptisimal records. Since I'm not sure which Anne King is my g-grandmother, I would not speculate on your Hugh of interest.  It could be the Hugh King baptized 06/02/1842.  But I could not locate any Michael King b 1837.  Maybe you'll have better luck.

I have done a DNA test, through 23&Me and a more detailed one looking at my Y line.  I am registered on GEDMatch.  My kit number is KT1907567. There is a Facebook page exclusively for Cavan geneology researchers who have uploaded their data to GEDMatch.  I belong to that as well.  It's a good group of folks and the conversations are well-monitored -- no advertising, no self-promotion, and no politics!  Good luck and stay in touch. • My father did a DNA test with Ancestry.com.  I will talk to him about uploading to GEDMatch. Perhaps that could help narrow things down. Thank you for the information!

  • Great, Kristen.  Let me know if I can help.  And thanks for your help.  It would be a real revelation to me to learn that our Kings are connected.  It was only a few years ago that I learned (via my brother's "pub research" in Leitrim) that one of my Leitrim Kennedy lines had settled in the Twin Cities area. I had previously assumed that most had emigrated to NYC, like my grandfather and a few of his siblings, or to the UK. So much to discover and learn about our pasts.

I look forward to comparing your father's DNA results with my own.  Cheers.
