My BREEN/BRIEN/O'BRIEN brick wall is the origins of my 3x great grandmother Hannah Breen, born C 1811, who married John Hogan on 19 February, 1829 in Upperchurch, Tipperary.  Hannah's parents are unknown, apart from the reference on her marriage record of "Widow Breen" as a witness.
Hannah and John farmed in the Coolderry area and had at least eight children between 1829 and 1840. On baptism transcripts from Borrisoleigh Parish records Hannah's maiden name was noted as either BRIEN or O'BRIEN.  Sponsors of the children included possible relatives: John Brien, Judy Brien, Biddy Brien, Jerry Brien and Michael Brien.
John Hogan died in Tipperary in 1847 and in 1856 his widow Hannah emigrated to Tasmania, Australia with five of her children. Michael Breen and Martin Breen were possible brothers or cousins of Hannah's who also settled in Tasmania with their families in the 1850's.
Do any members have those Tipperary names in their family trees please?

    Hi Jan . .

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out  . . . and to County Tipperary  . . .

Your research appears to be extensive . . and positive . . . with the assistance of Tipperary Heritage Unit . . .

    and . . when I read your inquiry . . .  I wondered why . . our normal researchers had not entered into dialog . . .

    I suspect they said . . Tipperary Heritage .. has answered all there is to know . . . so . . . pass on . .

But really the only question you appear to pose is . .

Is there someone out there . . .who has put together a TREE of these known people . . . ???

    The answer to this is . .  YES . .  and it was so obvious . . that at first . . I thought . . why hasn't Jan found this already . .

    or . . maybe I'm missing something  . . .

    Anyway . . for what it's worth  . . . on Ancestry . . . you will find teir TREE  (see below)

    Bosch .. Hannah . . .Rushton . . Burles . .

    Who this person or persons are . . . I have no further idea . . .
    It is up to you . . to make contact . . thru. Ancestry . . .

    Best I could do . . .

    Cheers . . Eamonn.

  • Hello Trish.  We have corresponded previously on the Breen and other families in Tasmania.  I still haven't been able to trace their Tipperary origins, hence this post revisiting the "brick wall".  I've seen trees on Ancestry type sites with some additional names or dates but none seem to have documentation and have just copied the matches.

    The hunt continues!

  • Hi, Better start of with I am not related to you.
I see Hannah Hogan in 1856 on the "Alice Walton" ship.
Mentions...."Name of Person On Whose Application Sent Out"......Sarah Hogan.

As Hannah married in 1829 and her Mother was a Widow, I looked in the Tithe records for Breen.
There is one female listed in Upperchurch. Lucky they have put her name...usually it's just have Widow.
Click into Breen name and look down the list...number 13 it's been over written from Michael then his name has been added in.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)

The only other record I saw as for Laurence Hogan 1829, immigration date 1853 to Philadelphia.
    In family search.

  • Thank you.  I have all the details on Hannah’s immigration with some of her children, her ‘Breen’ parents’ origins are the focus of my query.  That Tithe Applotment record could be helpful.

    Regards
