HI,
I am trying to find a birth location and parents for Annie Martin who was born in Donegal "2 November 1872" according to her death records in San Francisco, California in 1956. On the record her father is "Unknown Martin" and her mother is "Unknown." She first shows up in San Francisco about 1894.
I found a birth registration for "Hannah" Martin, born 2 Nov 1867 in Fannett to Edward Martin and Susan Sweeny from Ballinalost. I realize that the year is off, but according to US records "Annie" was 2 years older than her husband, and maybe shaved a few years off to bring her closer to appearing about his age.
Looking at a combination of Catholic parish records and civil registrations, it looks like Edward and Susan had:
- John - b July 1851
- Mary -b. Jan 1854 - I think she married James Friel 11 Dec 1887
- Edward - b. 1856
- Patrick - b. 1856, d. 1935, married Mary Cannon about 1900
- Denis - b. Nov 1858
- Daniel, b. 1865 - possibly married Bridget Carr 27 Jan 1895
- Hannah (who I think might be my Annie) b. 1867
- Susanna b 31 Jan 1871
From Civil records, I see Edward died 17 Dec 1870. This ties with Susan being the informant for Susanna's 1871 birth.
Susan lived with her married son Patrick in 1901 and 1911. She died 1 Dec 1912 in Fannett.
I'm trying to see if there might be any obituaries for Susan or any of her children (like maybe Patrick or Mary (Martin) Friel) which might mention a daughter/sister Annie in San Francisco. Are there any extant obituaries from the Clondavaddog area? And could there be a notation in a Clongavaddog parish register from about 1894-1896 which would have noted that Annie was married in San Francisco to Robert Powers. I know some Catholic church registers do marginal notations for marriages occurring elsewhere.
Any other ideas how I might tie "my" Annie Martin Powers to the Hannah baptised in Clondavaddog in 1867?
Thanks for your help.

Hi mroddyn3. I have been checking out all available newspapers from about that time and unfortunately I was unable to find an obituaries for Susan martin or any of her children such as Patrick or Mary. I do know that in the US obituaries and notation in parish registers would be common place, however this would rarely be the case here in Donegal in the 1800s. I also have heard that sometimes church registers do marginal notations for marriages occurring elsewhere but it is something have yet to see in the Parish registers for Clonadavaddog.

The martin family that you are enquiring about has come up on as few family trees. In particular Patrick and Mary Martin's family. I even have Patrick in my own family tree due to him being married to Cannon .
I know the owners of these family trees, and just like myself they have had thier DNA done with Ancestry. If it is a case where you have also had you DNA done with ancestry, there is a good chance that connection will show up for that family or to at least other some families in Fanad (Parish of Clonadavaddog)

Hi Mary, these are my Great Grandparents and my Grand Uncles and Aunts.. Patrick Martin was my Grandfather and He married Mary Cannon , my Grandmother. My cousin still owns the Martin House. My Father Edward born 1904 came to USA in 1924, he always thought he was the first Martin to come here. Maybe he was wrong.
Hannah could be Annie as you said and also Johanna. I am going to see if Roddy comes up as a match on Ancestry. Now I now I have ties to Powers but I only know from my Ryan and Kelly side from Offaly. Any children of Annie Powers if related would be cousins of mine.
As far as I knew my Father was the first Martin to come over but going to see what I find. You can write me at mayofireland@yahoo.com, Mary Martin

Mary Roddy. I looked on the 1851 census for the Martins. and found this. You see Maryanne was trying to claim she was born before 1854 but theyy could not prove it so she did not get the pension when she applied. Notice Hannah's name is Annie, so you might be on the right tract. My GED no. is A960797 . Did you take the DNA test?.

Hi Mary,
Thank you for taking the time to reply. My oldest brother is a great-grandson of Annie (Martin) Powers. Annie is the one I thought might be the daughter of Edward Martin and Susan Sweeny. If Edward and Susan were Annie's parents, you would be my brother's 2nd cousin once removed. But I compared your kit with my brother's and you only share 1 segment of 9.3 cM on chromosome 2. That is way too little for the proposed relationship, so I guess it's back to the drawing board for me to try to find Annie Martin Power's parents.
Thanks for your time,
Mary

Yes I tried to find some connection but no luck finding anything about my Hannah coming to USA. I will tell you this if you know when Annie arrived in USA most like to New York port of call for most irish ship. You might look on the second pg. of the record and find one of her parents listed, showing their home town in Ireland. Now when my Martins came from Donegal the port they left from was Londonderry.
Good Luck
Mary
