My great grandfather Patrick Doyle was from Co Longford. He was born circa 1842 - i.e. age 19 when he joined Royal Irish Constabulary - RIC in June 1861, having previously been a labourer.
I know his father was also named Patrick & his occupation was given as a farmer in 1882 when Patrick junior married in Westmeath. They were Catholics.
I have been unable to establish his birth or baptism date as I have no Parish or locality. However, he was recommended by a J McManus - a Justice of the Peace, when he joined the Police.
I am seeking any information on the family. Alternatively, if anyone knows where Mr McManus operated that would be helpful.
Many Thanks

Jim:
I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and there was a November 11 1842 baptismal record for a Patrick Doyle with father Patrick Doyle and mother Judith Lee. Sponsors were Patrick Lee and Bridget Clark. The church was Columbkille. There were also two Patrick Doyle baptismal records in 1840.
I've been looking at RIC records on the subscription site FindMyPast and so far have not found his entry record. Do you know when he retired.
Are you aware of siblings to Patrick?

Hello again Roger.
His RIC Service number was 26889. He served from 18/6/1861 (age 19 - i.e. born 1842) & retired 16/8/1891, after serving 30 years.
His children (including my Gran) were born in Scariff, where he was last posted as Head Constable.
I have no info on siblings - only that his father Patrick was a farmer (from marriage record) Presumably from Co Longford?
He retired to Killaloe, where he died 29/7/1893 age 50 (i.e. born 1843) so the baptism date of November 1842 you found fits both declared ages.!
I presume Columbkille is in Longford?
I joined the Killaloe site too & put a query on there as info I have suggests he may have kept a Pub on retirement 1891-1893, but no other details
I am particulary interested in him as I and my daughter have Police service - plus my wifes uncles & grandfather, so I am trying to find other descendants who may have a photograph of Patrick.
Thanks again

Jim:
I looked at the available RIC data on FindMyPast and I don't think there is any new info that you don't already have.
The baptismal record I located was Columbkille in Co. Longford. The townland was Aghagreagh. Patrick had six siblings (at least) based on the records in the subscription site Roots Ireland. Brigid 1833 John 1835 Ann 1837 James 1840 Luke 1845 Michael 1847 I did not locate a marriage record. Hopefully this is the correct family.
Have you tested your DNA?

Hi Roger
Many thanks for this very useful & interesting additional info.
In trying to establish whether this is the correct family I have looked again at Scariff records, hoping to establish who were the sponsors of Patrick's children at baptism. (i.e. possibly one of his above siblings?)
However, microfilm records there stop at 1881, but there is a footnote that more info may be available via Roots ireland.
I wonder if you could look whether there is any more info on Julia DOYLE b 9.3.1888, Mary Anne b Jul-Sep 1844 or Patrick James b Jul-Sep 1886? I would be very grateful.
Ref DNA - I am presently considering having a test done.
Thanks again
Jim
