Searching for McKelvey family in Cork

I posted an ancestor profile of James Edward McKelvey born 1 June 1839 in Cork. He served in the Army in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. On his regimental roll it states he was born in the Parish of Upper Shannon in the Town of Cork in the County of Cork. I have seen other soldiers recorded with the same birthplace. I am wondering if anyone may be able to  explain where Upper Shannon is or may have been.
