Good evening

I am tyring to trace some family in Carlow.

John Cavanagh and Mary Doyle had a daughter Kate/Catherine said to have been born about 1851.

Catherine married John Kelly at Pollpeasty on 2 August 1870.  They both came to New Zealand on board the "Carrick Castle" in 1874.  Their daughter Anne was my great grandmother.

When they married John Cavanagh/Kavana was stated as being a "labourer".

I would like to be able to learn more about my Cavanagh/Kavanagh family ancestors.

Many thanks

A search using the subscription site Roots Ireland for Catherine Kavanagh in Co. Carlow with the parents you listed came up as a "no record". All fourteen Carlow RC parishes are in the Roots Ireland data base and all have records starting before 1850. I did locate a John Kavanagh baptismal records on May 5 1844 in Bagenalstown RC parish with the correct parental names. Sponsors Thomas Whitty and Mary Cavanagh.

Possibly he was an older brother to Catherine.

  • Hello

I have been trying to find some more helpful information and this is what I have come across:

Catherine/Kate Kavanagh is supposed to have had two sisters called Alice and Bridget also two brothers called Michael and Patrick.

This information is from my great aunt - Catherine's granddaughter.  She also said that Bridget married an O'Brien and then a Durrant.  She didn't know who Alice married.  But both Alice and Bridget were meant to have come out to NZ to visit Catherine, but I don't know if they stayed or went back to Ireland.  She didn't mention dates and has passed away.

I will keep digging for dates.

Thanks for your suggestions and information.

    Vanessa
