Looking for information on my great grandfather Thomas Dwyer and his wife Kate (Moloney) who were married on Feb 13, 1877 in Toomevara by Daniel Flannery . Thomas was a tailor, as was his father, Denis Dwyer (my great-great grandfather). Kate's father was Michael Moloney and he was a shoemaker. Thomas Dwyer and Kate had four children: Dennis (b.1878), Michael (b. 1881), Nora (b. 1881), and Kate (b. 1886) and my grandmother, Anastasia Dwyer, who immigrated to the USA in 1909. Would like to find gravesites and/or other connections. Some indication that Kate may be buried in Annameadle. She died at age 30 of TB in 1888.

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located a possible baptismal record for Thomas.

May 7 1848 Toomevara   Denis Dwyer  Honora (no maiden name)

If this is the correct family, he had at least four younger siblings and with the gap in Toomevara baptismal records likely there were others. Mother's maiden name is likely Kirwan. They lived in a place called Barnagrotty which I have not yet located.

Did you locate a copy of the civil marriage record?

    Roger McDonnell

Patrick February 1 1850   Honora Kiravan

Ellen April 5 1852   Honora Kerwan

John June 11 1854  Honora Kervan   Barnagrotty

gap in records June 1856-May 1861

Mary  September 20 1862  Honor Kirwan

I found the civil marriage record. It was listed on the site as an 1876 marriage but the actual record shows 1877 as you indicated.

  • Thank you so much for your time! Seeing Kate was from Annameadle does make me think there is a good chance she is buried in the cemetery there. Thomas remarried a Jane Lowry on Feb. 7, 1889 at same church, so not sure if he would be buried near Kate or near 2nd wife or back in Barnagrotty. I can't believe Kate is listed as a spinster at 19! Wow. I would like to find Thomas' death certificate to see if he was alive when my grandmother, Anastasia Dwyer, came to US in 1910. I will keep searching for that. Her sister was already here.

  • Hello Elaine,
The researcher was looking for Barnagrotty, it's in the next county: Offaly (formerly King's County) The 1901 census has 2 Dwyer families in Barnagrotty: 1. Thomas aged 52 a tailor and probably your great grandfather and 2. Patrick aged 50 a farmer (probably the Patrick born Feb 1st 1850) Link: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/King_s_Co_/Cullenwaine…

    Townland link: https://www.townlands.ie/offaly/clonlisk/borrisnafarney/cullenwaine/bar…

Unfortunately I cannot locate any website that has headstone inscriptions for Dwyer. Neither could I locate his death record but he is not in 1911 census, so I 'might' assume he died between 1901 and 1911.

As a point of information, do an internet search for thomas dwyer Barnagrotty and look at the Dunkerrin Parish newsletters you will see Dwyer family names mentioned for Barnagrotty.

    Regards

Thanks so much for pointing out that Barnagrotty was across the line in Offaly.

  • Thank you, Eric, for adding to the information. I followed the link you sent, and saw that my grandmother, Anastasia, went to live with my GG's brother Patrick when she was just 13. It may be she went to live there after her mother Kate died at 30 from TB. I'll have to do the math to see ages and years as it's also possible she went to live at her uncle's home because her father died after her mother. This added to what Roger found earlier.

  • Hi Elaine I am a descendant of Michael Moloney through his son Peter a bootmaker and his son George, a shoemaker. You will find them in the 1901 census. In a somewhat bizarre situation, Moneygall village is described as Honeyjail town in the searchable digital transcript of the Official Irish census. Sorry I can’t post a hyperlink. Peter’s wife was Kate Tierney and you will find Michael Moloney / Molony referenced as Peter’s father on the marriage record. I have even seen the family name spelled as Mullowney. My late mother Sheila Kelly, nee Moloney remembered her father’s cousins, the Pounds coming into their house in Moneygall to change clothes before going to mass. You will note Edward Pound is a witness to Kate’s marriage on the official register. I do not know how the Moloneys and Pounds are related. Do you? Sadly there are no Pounds left at the appropriately named Pound’s Cross. As to your research, Annameadle is only a few yards inside the civil registration district for Nenagh, Co Tipperary. Moneygall village a short distance away , although in Offaly, was in the reporting district for Roscrea, Co Tipperary. Moneygall was changed to reporting to Birr Co. Offaly in the 1920’s. As if historic research from a distance wasn’t complicated enough ! Best regards Brendan Kelly
