My Great Grandmother Ellen Lavelle, born 1847, Castlebar, married John McDonnell, born 1842, Graffa More, in 1901 Castlebar.

Ellen is the daughter of Patrick (Patt) Lavelle, born 1810 in Lenaselliagh and married Mary Lally, born 1829 in Lenaselliagh.

Are any of these people in your family tree? Does anyone know anything about them. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

The subscription site Roots Ireland has the Patrick Lavelle/Mary Lally marriage on March 13 1845 in Aglish (Castlebar) RC parishes. Witnesses were William Lally and Bridget Lally. They had at least seven children but likely three died in infancy: James 1846 Ellen 1847 (died young?) Patrick 1850 Patrick 1851 Patrick 1863 (first two died young?) Henry 1858 Ellin 1861

Your note indicates that Ellen was born in 1847 so one possibility is that there were two Patrick Lavelle/Mary Lally couples in the parish.

Your message indicates that Ellen Lavelle married John McDonnell in 1901 in Castlebar. Here is the civil marriage record see third record. You will note that the father of this Ellen was Ned or Edward not Patrick so I don't believe this record is correct.

I can't find any Ellen Lavelle marriages in Castlebard church.

Let me know and we will try to assist further..

  • Hi Roger.
Thank you so much for the information you have given me. I will look again at my tree! By tfe way, my Grandmother was Mary McDonnell from Graffymore and married John O'Brien. You wouldn't be related to my McDonnells by any chance?!

Happy Easter to you and your family!

Happy Easter!  My grandfather, Patrick McDonnell, lived near a small village in East Mayo called Carracastle which is very close to the Roscommon border. In fact, when he was born in 1886, his townland was in Mayo but after the Local Government Act of 1898, his townland was moved to Roscommon. Patrick emigrated in 1907 to Philadelphia.
