I recently learned that my great-great grandfather died in the Tulla Workhouse on 23 December 1895.  His death records indicate that he may have been there for 2 months.  Do any records from the Workhouse exist that could confirm this or provide further information about him?  Thanks.

    You did not give the name of your GG grandfather. I assume you have his residence before he entered the Workhouse?

    The files of the following Workhouses were destroyed in a fire during the Irish Civil War in 1922: Ballyvaughan, Kiladysart and Tulla.

  • Hi Tom:  It's nice to hear from you again.  The Tulla Workhouse records do not survive, but the civil registration would give information about any births, marriages or deaths that took place there.  

     

    You should be aware that after the Famine, many of the Workhouses were used as community hospitals, so just because your ancestor died there, does not mean that he was put into the workhouse due to distressed circumstances.  A number of older people and those who were very sickly were brought there as there were doctors and nursing staff.
