Hi. I am currently tracing my family history and I am now stuck. I am trying to find out the names of the parents of Andrew Mooney born 1822 in Portglenone County Antrim. Every where I look is coming up a blank. Can anyone advise / help?

Thanks    Ian

  • Ian,

For a birth in 1822 you need to rely on church baptism records, where they exist. (And they are probably not on-line). You don’t say what denomination Andrew was. Portglenone Church of Ireland lost its early records in the 1922 fire and has none before 1873.  Portglenone 1st Presbyterian has no records before 1826, 2nd start in 1821 & 3rd in 1869. RC records start in 1864.  So only 1 church in the parish has any records for 1822. The 2nd closed in about 1912 but a copy of their records is in PRONI in Belfast. (Personal visit required to view them).

If Andrew was Protestant and married 1845 onwards in Ireland, you should get his father’s name from the marriage certificate.

There were about 12 Mooney farms in the Portglenone area in 1834. See the tithes here:

I have managed to find out that Andrews fathers name was also Andrew who put his profession as a farmer on his sons marriage certificate. I cannot find any farms belonging to an Andrew Mooney unless it was another relatives farm.

        Any idea's???

  • Ian,

The only Andrew Mooney in Ulster in the tithes was in Gortereigh (Gortereghy) in 1834 in the parish of Rasharkin, which is the next parish north of Portglenone.

Griffiths Valuation 1861 lists an Andrew Mooney on plots 27 & 28 with around 77 acres (so a big farm by Irish standards). He appears to have died around 1863 and was replaced by John Mooney. He was a bachelor who died in 1888:

He was succeeded by Rose Mooney. There’s 2 Rose Mooneys in the townland in 1901. Both were Catholic. What denomination was your family?
