I am looking for information on Katherine Josephine Concannon's (1857-1959) family in Tuam. Her parents were Martin Concannon and Mary Donahue Concannon.  She was one of eight sisters. I believe her youngest sister Julia Concannon married James Glynn in Tuam .

Katherine Concannon immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in the late 1880s.  She married John Lyston in the late 1890s in Baltimore. John Lyston was a major league baseball player. He later became a Customs Inspector at the Port of Baltimore.

John and Kate Lyston had four children. Mary, Kathleen, John and James ( my grandfather).

Katherine's sister Mary Concannon also immigrated to Baltimore.

John Lyston's parents were James Lyston and Bridget (Brassell) Lyston. They were from Limerick. They immigrated to Baltimore in the late 1850s.

I have more family info If needed. .

Respectully,

Jimmy Keenan

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and was unable to find any baptismal records for children of Martin Concannon and Mary Donahue. I did find the 1891 church marriage record for Julia Concannon to James Glynn and the marriage was on February 20 1891 in the parish of Kilconly/Kilbennan which is just to the west of Tuam. The RC records for Kilconly/Kilbennan parish start in 1872 which explains why I could not find any records.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1066

So likely your Concannons came from Kilbennan civil parish. NOTE Most immigrants would use the nearest big town as their place of origin which in Katherine's situation would have been Tuam

There are only 19 townlands in Kilbennan civil parish. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation shows a Martin Concannon in Tonlegee townland which could be your family location although all records I located just showed Kilbannon so it is possible this record is for another Martin.

I did find civil marriage records for two other sisters to Catherine-- Bridget and Honor. I also located the likely death records for Martin and Mary. See below.

1877 marriage for Bridget sister to Katherine  James Hession was the informant when Martin died       https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

1882 marriage for Honor fourth record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

    second record 1890 Martin    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

    seventh record 1892 Mary   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

  • Thank you very much for this wonderful information, I really appreciate it. It was very kind of you to research this for me and I am extremely grateful.

All of my great great grandparents on both my Mother and Father's side were born in Ireland. In addition two of my great grandparents were born there as well. Although I was born in America I am 100% Irish. I am very proud of my Irish heritage.

Regrettably my great grandmother Kate ( Concannon ) Lyston died the year before I was born. Kate taught my Mom to memorize all of her sister's names when she was a little girl.

The information you provided is so interesting and informative, thanks again. I'm sure my great grandmother is smiling down from heaven.

I also wanted to mention that two of the eight Concannon sisters were named Katherine. Sadly the first Katherine passed away at age two. When Martin and Mary Concannon's had the next child they named her Katherine as well.

    Regards,

    Jimmy
