Hi, I'm seeking information on the following McCowens who lived in Dublin. James McCowen (1844-1895) and his wife, Maria Foran (1843-1886), originally from County Laois, married in settled in Dublin around 1867. James worked for the Post Office. They had seven children, one of whom, Richard, born in 1874, arrived in the U.S. ca. 1881, at age 7. No other immediate family member accompanied him, and while we assume he emigrated with a family friend or uncle or aunt, we have no idea why the family would ship out such a young son. Richard eventually lived in New York and New Jersey and died around 1910. Richard's brothers Thomas and William eventually emigrated to New York in the 1890s. The remaining living siblings continued to live in Dublin, where they had families of their own. James McCowen and his wife are buried in Dublin,

Hi Margaret, This family should be in civil births, marriages and deaths that are freely available on the Irish government website www.irishgenealogy.ie. It's a matter of tracking the birth of Richard and that will give a registration district. It should be possible to find his parents marriage also and that will give the names and addresses of the bride and grooms father's addresses and occupations as well as the church the couple were married in. Their religious denomination will be key to adding further generations back as it's church records that will bring you back further. Working forward the 1901 and 1911 census are freely available on http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ . Search using the names you have and dates of birth for the children who stayed in Ireland.

Hi Margaret, I have just seen your April 2021 post looking for information on the family of James McCowen (died 1895). James was the younger brother of my Great-Great-Grandfather Richard. You may already have followed the lead to check the Irish government website "www.irishgenealogy.ie" ... I have collected this information as part of my own family tree search. Richard (born 1874) had a sister Mary Ellen who married John Burke. They had three children Maria (Birdie), James (Jim) and William (Sid) born between 1895 and 1897. I have bee told that Maria and William also emigrated to the USA. I would be happy to share my research with you and also learn of how you might be related to James. Hopefully you will see my post.
