Hi,

  My great-great grandmother was Hannah (probably Catherine Hannah) Clougher, born in Roscommon in 1823, who immigrated to the states sometime before 1845.  She married Patrick Gaffney, formerly of Galway, in 1845.  In her marriage records she cites "Hugh Clougher" as her father and "Hannah Farrier" as her mother (not sure I have mother's name correct).  In the 1824 Tithe records, there is a "Hue Claugher" in "Lismaha Or Boherbee, Tisrara, Roscommon."  In 1826 there is a "Hugh Clogher" in "Coolatubbrid, Taughboyne, Galway and Roscommon, Ireland."  I'm wondering if anyone has any information about this particular Clougher family or the Farriers?  I've seen several references in this message board to Timothy Clogher, but not to Hugh.

    This is a difficult situation trying to determine which Hugh Clogher is your ancestor.

    The two locations are about seven miles apart in parishes that border each other. By the way, Taughboyne parish is Taghboy. The RC parish for both locations is Dysart and Tisrara and as you likely know baptismal records do not start until 1850,

    Coolatubbrid is actually Coolatober 

    I was not able to find any references to the surname Farrier.

    The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for both parishes show Clogher records including a Catherine Clogher in Lismaha townland Tisrara parish and Patrick Clogher in Coolatober townlandTaghboy parish. It would appear that both Hughs were deceased as of 1855.

      Thank you for your prompt reply.  I will check into those links you provided; I hadn't seen the Catherine Clogher record.  Yes, I've had an Ancestry.com DNA test done and have one DNA match (4-5th cousin) related to the Timothy Clogher who immigrated to Massachusetts.  

      At least knowing that those locations are close, and knowing that it seems the name 'Hugh Clogher' is not a common one, I think I've zeroed in to the most promising area.  I don't suppose there are any Cloghers still in the vicinity?  Any graveyards with family plots?

      As for the name 'Farrier', this surname is handwritten on Catherine Hannah Clougher's death record. I know there are Farriers in Dublin in the 19th century; however, I also realize that the handwriting on the death record could be read as 'Ferrier' or some other name.  More work to be done ...

    Here is a link to the online Irish phone book  https://www.eirphonebook.ie/q/name/   This data base only covers land line phones. If you go to the search bar and insert Clogher county roscommon and check the Residential TAB, you will get four records. One of them should be of interest to you.

    We are not allowed to provide personal info to you directly but you can search on your own. I would suggest writing a letter rather than a cold call.
