Hallo, I am trying to trace more details of a family named Warren that lived in Cork in early 1800's; My great grandmother was Margaret Warren, born 1846 bapt R.C. Her father was Thomas Warren; Margaret married in February 1862 in the R.C. Church in Passage west, Henry Southam. We know that Henry was with Royal Navy but have no further details.

Margaret and Henry were in Portsmouth by April 1862 because their daughter Lucretia Newell Southam was born there.

As children we were told that our Irish ancestors had to flee Ireland to escape being murdered by ?

We haven't been able to prove this at all especially as Margaret's son, James Kennedy, my  grandfather was born in Portsmouth in 1873. It seems that Henry southam died arounbd 1870 but I have yet to find a marriage record for Margaret and James' father, Alexander Kennedy who was English for 3 generations and before that Scots.

SO, I would like to know what happened to Thomas Warren and were there other children; also his wife's name. There seems to have been someone named Lucretia because that name has been carried down through numnerous generations of those who lived in UK but we dont know where it began. I did find a repport oif a meeting for the Passage West Dispensary Committee and on the list are Thomas Warren and William B (H?) Warren, V.C. (could that be Victoria Cross?)

So glad that I stumbled on this site as I can see lots of others trying to sort out Warrne - here's hoping!

Thank you from Down Under, Coreene Kennedy

  • Hi Coreene:

The records for Passae West parish go back in the late 1700s but for some reason they are not available on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie

I then searched the subscription site FindMyPast and they had a record of the marriage but they showed February 23 1861. Here is the transcription. I would check the link to the register and make sure they did not mistranscribe the year.

I tried to find the baptismal record for Margaret ( As an aside, civil birth, marriage and death registration started in 1864).. I searched for Margaret Warren with father Thomas and only two records came up-- one in 1846 in St. Mary's Cork city and the other in 1824 in Newmarket parish. I know you show 1846 but did she really marry at 15? The 1824 record would likely be too old?

I looked for siblings and most of the Warren records with father Thomas were held at St. Mary's in Cork city. I only found one record in Passage West- a Mary Warren

I searched the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of housheold listing for Thomas Warren and found a solid lead in Barnahely civil parish. People in that parish would have attended Passage West. He lived in Barnehely townland  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/barnahely.php

Let me know if you have questions. I will look for a death record for Thomas.

  • Coreene:

I located a civil death record in 1880 for a Thomas Warren in Ringaskiddy townland in Barnehely civil parish. See sixth record looks like Mary Moore was the informant.

  • Hallo Roger,

TVM for your reply of April 21. I apologise for the delay in replying. I am sorry to say that we had t obid farewell to our wonderful Irish/Red Setter around the same time. He was 13 and it was time but I am only just coming up from grieving.

Thank you for the records. I did check Thomas Warren death registration and agree with you -  this is almost certainly him. He would have been born around 1798 by my reckoning.

The Mary Moore who was at his death could have been an odler daughter, married to Moore.

She could be either a sister or half sibling to Margaret who was born in 1846.

I shall check out the Griffith's valuation as well.

    Many thanks again, Coreene
