You don't mention an approximate year of birth and the religion of your James Swann. There are James Swann baptismal records available on the subscription site Roots Ireland but without having his parents names, there is no way to confirm if any of these records belong to him. 

Have you considered a DNA test where you might get matches to other descendants of James Swann who might know more about the family?

Hi roger, james swann religion was Roman Catholic was born in 1820 in Ballina Ireland married to Ann Charlton I don’t know when he immigrated to nz brought his father in laws land in ruapuke. He died in 1864. I think his mums name is Margaret swann but don’t know her maiden name

The Ballina RC parish  baptismal records start in May 1823 and I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not get a record.  Since he was likely born in 1820 according to your information, no record would be available.

I also did not find a James Swann marriage record to an Ann Charlton. Not aware where and when they married but there is a gap in Ballina marriage records between 1842 and 1850   https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0753

James Swann married Anne/Ann Charleton in 1855 in New Zealand (Registration No. 1855/1558) - You can order records from the NZ DIA BDM Online and use the birth and death search functions to order birth and death certificates for them and their descendants.

Death notice referencing Ballina available via the Paperspast website (New Zealand Herald 28/04/1884). Unfortunately, it doesn't indicate when he emigrated. The Paperspast website offers old newspapers which can be searched for background information.
