I am searching for any information on what happened to my great grandmother Mary Jane (Loughnane) Cleary. I have recently found while searching under "Mary Loughnane" from 1911 to 1960 that she was remarried after her first husband died to Michael Brunnock on October 23, 1913 but I cannot find either one of them in any records after that.  Michael Brunnock was a widower and 40 years old and she was written as "Mary Jane Cleary" widow and 30 years old.  This record comes up only when searching for her with her maiden name though - Mary Loughnane.  The marriage record says they were living on Market Street in Cahir at the time of the marriage.

Any information on what happened to this couple and especially her would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Mary Anne

  • Hi Mary Anne,

    A couple of ideas...

--Have you searched to see if the Brunnocks had any children?

--Have you searched Irish newspaper archives? Burial databases?

--Have you considered that they might have emigrated?

--Perhaps write a query to the weekly newspaper in Tipperary.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi Mary Anne,

Subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie - has a record of a Michael Brunnock, Widower, Market Street, Cahir, marrying a Bridget Murphy in Clogheen in May 1915.

His father is recorded as "Michael Brunnock". Witnesses: Patrick O'Neill and Katie Maher. There are a number of family recorded to this marriage.

No record found on www.irishgenealogy.ie for this marriage or the death of Mary Anne Loughnane-Cleary.

Mary Anne Loughnane's father is recorded as "James Loughnane" in her marriage in 1913. Witnesses in that marriage were Thomas Doheny and Bridget White. You should check with the civil registration office in Cahir for a record of ther death.

McCoy - when you said "there are a number of family recorded to the marriage of Michael Brunnock and Bridget Murphy" could you let me know who?  Mary Jane my great GM had 2 children - -Mary Anne Cleary and Ellen Cleary who would have been about 6 and 5 years old at the time of her marriage to Michael Brunnock - I'm wondering if they are on there.  Mary Anne and Ellen eventually came to America in 1925 but said they were in a catholic orphanage for a while after their parents death.  They  are both dead now so I cannot ask questions of them  if Mary Brunick was my GGmother, I'm wondering what happened to her girls when she died - why didn't Michael and Bridget take them in.  Thanks for all your help so far!  Mary Anne

  • Hi, Mary Anne,

    The following from www.rootsireland.ie:

Mary Cleary baptised August 25th 1907 - Cahir - St. Maryscahir.ie - Father: Michael Cleary - Mother: Mary Loughnan,

Baptismal Sponsors: Henry Cleary and Jane Murnane

Helen Cleary baptised December 1st 1908. Father: Michael Cleary - Mother: Margaret Loughnan

Baptismal Sponsors: William Purtell and Margaret McAuley.

Address for both was Market Street, Cahir.

I have not found a marriage record for Michael Cleary and Mary Loughnan or a death record for Michael.

You should contact the Parish Secretary in Cahir -  stmaryscahir.ie - to see if they have a record of their marriage and the death of Michael.

In relation to Michael Brunnock and Bridget Murphy: there are six entries: Michael 1916, Michael 1917, Michael 1918, William 1919, Bridget 1920, Bridget 1922. The duplications may be caused by death or error in transcription. You should contact the Civil Registration Office at Clonmel  crs.clonmel@hse.ie  should you wish to confirm those those names and birth years.

I checked for the first marriage of Michael Brunnock and found an entry of the marriage of Michael Brunnock and Margaret Flynn, Doon, Clogheen on February 27th 1900. There is a record in the Civil Registration of the death of Margaret Brunnock, 35 years Doon, Clogheen on May 16th 1911.  Michael Brunnock's father is recorded as "William Brunnock", Farmer.

There are six birth enries for this "Michael Brunnock" and Margaret Flynn. 1901 William,1903 John, 1904 Thomas, 1906 Patrick, 1908 Denis, 1910 John.

I searched for a census record for Michael Cleary and Mary Cleary, but did not find any.  Similar result for Mary and Helen Cleary in Cahir.

  • Hi Mary Anne,

In the transcription record for the baptismal sponsors for Helen Cleary, "William Purtell" should read "William Purtill".

I attach record of his marriage to Mary Murphy in 1906, also census record for 1911. Not recorded in 1901. Form B1 relates to the property owner.

There is a "Cahir Social and Historical Society" - Cahir News@cahirnews.ie. You should consider making contact.

  • Hi Mary Anne,

I should have stated that there is a "Mary J. Cleary" owner of House No. 10. Form B1  The family number is recorded as 8.

It appears that the "Head of House" is a person other that Michael or Mary Cleary. I will try and sort it out and get back to you later.

  • Hi Mary Anne,

In relation to Michael Cleary, I do not know what information you have gathered.

I have found a baptism record for the parish of Clogheen which records a Michael Cleary being baptised there on January 19th 1879.

Parents: John Cleary and Maria Devereux. Sponsors: Patrick Dunlay and Maria Cleary.

The Civil Record differs in dates, but both are January 1879. His father is recorded as a Carpenter by occupation.

    Both records attached.

There is a record of the death of a Michael Cleary, from Caher in Clonmel Hospital on May 19th 1909. He is recorded as being married and 36 years of age and a Painter by occupation. He had been ill for one year.

  • Hi Mary Anne,

Attached Civil marriage record of John Cleary, Carpenter and Mary Devereux on July 4th 1868 in Clogheen, also the record of Anne who appears to be the youngest of a large family.

    You can access the following on  www.irishgenealogy.ie  - Mary - 1869, Margaret, 1871, William 1873, John, 1877, James, 1880.

In Roots transcription some names are duplicated and triplicated as the transcriber entered County Waterford for the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore and then another entry for County Tipperary. James is also recorded as "Jacob".

    Best Wishes
