I am looking for Francis Barrett 1805-1852 form Co Mayo. His wife was Susan Dougherty. Susan and her children emigrated to the US in 1853, ending up in Erin Prairie WI.
I'm interested in finding birth records of Francis and Susan as well as marriage records. They may have been from a place called Kilcummen.
thanks -

Hi Kate,
There is the parish of Kilcommon in North Co. Mayo known as Kilcommon Erris in the diocese of Killala.
Griffiths valuations - www.askaboutireland.ie - has in the region of 80 Barrett names and 30 Doherty. No Francis Barrett shown. Ask about Ireland is a free site and you should consult it to see if there is any name that may be familiar to you.
Spellings can vary in surnames.
Regards,
McCoy

Kate:
There is also a small civil parish called Kilcummin in north Co.Mayo. There are only 13 townlands and the village of Rathlackan. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for the civil parish only lists one Barrett record a John who lived in the village of Rathlackan. There is also one Dogherty, a Mary also in the village of Rathlackan.
The RC parish is called Lacken. Records for that parish start in 1852 too late for your family.
It is possible that John was related to Francis and Mary Dogherty was related to Susan.
What document or reference do you have that shows Kilcummen? Maybe we can then determine whether it is Kilcummin or Kilcommon parish.

Thank you both for your speedy replies. I cannot document whether their origin was Kilcommon or Kilcummin. The name has been passed through the family, there are no records that I can find, and to Americans both names sound the same. So it might be either one. And the parish names versus the civil, parish names for places is baffling. I mean no disrespect,I simply cannot understand it all.
thank you for trying

Kate:
I'm from Maryland and I had a difficult time initially understanding civil parishes vs. RC parishes. There are some very good reference sites such as johngrenham.com There are more civil parishes than RC parishes. For example, Co. Mayo has 69 civil parishes and around 55 RC parishes.
Have you considered DNA testing? Possibly you will have matches with others who have Barrett/Dogherty connections and have more info on the origins of the family in Mayo.

Ignore my DNA question. I just saw your reply to the Clark/Padden message.
