Hi,

I am trying to find the parish and family that my 2nd great grandfather Thomas Carey left to go to Stockton-on-Tees in Durham in the north of England. His marriage and family from then on is well documented but nailing his roots is proving difficult. I have his marriage certificate of 10th July 1876 in Stockton at age 26, which states his father's name was also Thomas Carey and was deceased, his father's profession is stated as a gardener.
We were told he came from Cork and that he was a tinker there. He stowed away on a ship and made his way to Stockton. He worked as a labourer (colliery most likely) in Stockton according to census. He then came to South Wales with some of his family to work in the colliery here. The 1911 census confirmed Cork as his place of birth, all previous census just state Ireland. If it helps his wife in Stockton 10 years his junior was Ann Carney, that is how it is spelt on the marriage certificate but some other family members are Kearney, I have also seen Kerney and Karney on census.
I have done the DNA on ancestry but I have nothing I can associate with Thomas or his parents yet.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so we would have to rely on available church records.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were no 1850 baptismal records but four records in the 1840s with father Thomas. The info is shown below and since you don't know the mother's name, we can't confirm any of these records but at least you have some leads.

Thomas Cary baptized February 10 1843 Rathcormac RC parish father Thomas Cary mother Catherine Connell

Thomas Carey baptized May 8 1845 Youghal RC parish father Thomas Carey mother Ellen Cashman

Thomas Carey baptized December 28 1845   Kilwoth RC parish father Thomas Carey mother Honora Burke

Thomas Carey baptized June 16 1845 Killavullen RC parish father Thomas Carey mother Margaret Ryan

Are you aware of any siblings?

As you look at your matches and if they have a tree, I would look for the four maiden names above for a possible connection.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for your extremely prompt reply, and the info that you have given me to work on, thats a good tip about maiden names.

I don't know anything about siblings unfortunately,

Hopefully one of these Thomas's is my ancestor.

    Many Thanks

I found two more records on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  I had checked this site before and got no records but I figured out that I reversed the first and last names which explains why I did not get any records.

Thomas Carey baptized July 15 1846 Cork South RC parish also known as St. Finbars father Thomas Carey and mother Bridget O'Grady

Thomas Carey baptized November 6 1846  same parish St. Finbars  father Thomas Carey mother Mary Sullivan

  • Hi Ron

I am in the same situation, he is also my 2nd great grandfather and i am stuck at the same point, all i have been able to find is a link to his father being also thomas and mother possibly ellen cashman but it could obviously be any of the above listed ones, have you been able to find out anything else please?

  • Hi Craig,

I have nothing concrete yet, I have had a spell off it but I am starting up again now. I have had a DNA match with a common ancestor recently that has thrown a spanner in the works, alas I got no reply when I sent a message. But the common ancestor was allegedly Thomas's mother, her name being Jane Beazley, I have seen spellings of that vary. The common ancestors are based on members trees, and I am not convinced yet that this is an accurate tree, in the Carey line at least. We are however DNA matched which is intriguing to say the least, so I need to evaluate it, check their tree pretty much.  Are we allowed to post email addresses on here? I think it may be worth keepng in touch. Or do you use Ancestry?
