Hi, I have gone back as far as 1838 the birth date of my great grandfather Thomas Coates born in Celbridge,Kildare. I am trying to find his father William Coates (married to Margaret). Marriage details for Thomas show his father as being from Celbridge. I believe he is one of the William Coates in the Griffiths Valuation, possibly the one in Scullogestown but I can't prove the link or find any of William's other children, although I think a daughter may have been called Maria.

Can you provide the religious denomination for your Coates family? If they were Roman Catholic, the subscription site Roots Ireland indicates the following:
The Celbridge registers date from 1767 but the microfilmed records in the National Library
which we have indexed only start at 1857 to circa 1881/2.
There were no marriages microfilmed. Contact the parish.If the family was Church of Ireland, the baptisms are on Roots Ireland but marriage records are held at the Representative Church Library in Dublin. You would need to pay someone to check the marriage records.
