I'm looking for information for a James Valentine and his family in Kilbaylet, Wicklow in the 1800s. My ancestor Anne Valentine married a William Fennell in Donard, Wicklow Dec 9, 1881, and on her marriage register names James Valentine in Kilbaylet as her father.

I have found other documents naming a Jane Valentine born 1847 also a daughter of a James Valentine and his wife Mary in Kilbaylet. Jane married a Peter Valentine in 1871 in Donard, Wicklow.

Then there is another Peter Valentine that married a Susan Jackson, he is also from Kilbaylet and the son of a James Valentine.

I'm trying to find information if these 3 people are siblings and if all three fathers are the same person and possibly anymore information about James Valentine and his wife Mary.

There is a Will of a James Valentine from Kilbaylet that died 9 Feb 1888, and a death register for a Mary Valentine that died 11 Jan, 1887 at the age of 74 also in Kilbaylet. Could these documents be who I'm looking for?

Thank you to anyone that is able to help me in my search

The baptismal records for Donard Church of Ireland parish start in 1873 and can be found in the Representative Church Library in Dublin. Marriage record startin 1848 are available on the subscription site Roots Ireland as well as the RCL.

The 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Donard civil parish shows James Valentine and a Peter Valentine both in Kilbaylet Upper townland. Possibly they were brothers.

The 1833 Tithe listings for Donard civil parish shows a Peter Valentine leasing/owning 140 acres of land in Kilbaylet. Not sure if this Peter is the father of James and Peter shown in 1854 or if the Peter is the same person and maybe the father of James.

Without the baptismal records for Donard, it is hard to prove that Jane, Anne and Peter are siblings but from all indications I belive they are siblings.

I assume you located the two Valentine families in the 1901 census in Kilbaylet Upper.

  • Thank you very much for your response Roger. I have found documents that show James' daughter Jane married a Peter Valentine, son of another Peter Valentine also from Kilbaylet. Peter Jr.'s mother may be Anne Fearis who is his father's 2nd wife married Dec 18, 1848. Peter Sr. Was born about 1818 in Kilbaylet and did as well have a first wife that I have not yet found. Could it be a possibility of James and Peter Sr. being half brothers and their children marry? Or maybe cousins? Peter Sr. is also the son of yet another Peter Valentine.

  • Hello

One branch of my family (the Valentines) is from this area and I have a James b1765 who had a son Peter b1802 in Dunlavin.  I also have an Anne (daughter of James) b 1795 in Dunlavin but no idea of who she married  - maybe it was your William Fennell. Coincidentally I also have a Fennell branch of my tree but so far haven't found any connection to the Valentines in Wicklow. Would be great to suddenly make that connection!

Even if this James, Peter and Anne aren't yours, I would be very comfortable in guessing that they are related.  This is a relatively small location (Kilbaylet-Donard-Dunlavin) and Valentine is not an extremely common name.

Would be interesting if you could confirm the religion of your ancestors. That might help us narrow it further. My relatives were Church of Ireland and then became Roman Catholic (probably converted to marry) in the mid 1800s.

Happy to keep exploring this connection!

  • Hello Ciara,

Thank you very much for you reply, sorry I have taken so long to get back to you.

My Anne Valentine was born in 1854, so she can't be the same as yours. In my research your James Valentine marries an Anne Jackson. Their son James dies in 1883 in Donard, so he can't be my James either as mine dies 1888 in Kilbaylet. So as of yet I haven't found any connection. I don't at all know their religion for sure either. Maybe we will find our connection in the future.

    Thank you again.
