I have the record of the marriage of my great great grandfather, Michael Moroney, to Mary Costelloe in Cashel on 15 July 1823. Transcription:
July 15th. 1823. Michl. Moroney of the parish of Tipperary, & Mary Costelloe of the parish of Cashel were married by the Revd. James McDonnell in presence of Richd. Anderson & Honora Mulcahy. Cum speciali permissio Parochi Decani Ryan.
My question is what does "cum speciali permissio Decani Ryan" mean? I understand they have got got special permission from Dean Ryan but why would they have needed this? I have searched for answers but not found anything. Hoping you can help me. Many thanks Tina Nichols

Tina:
Possibly they were related (3rd cousins?) and needed a dispensation.

They may have been given permission to not have the banns read. Or as Roger said, they may have been relatives.

It may also be the case that one of the parties was under age and therefore required ' permission.'

Tina,
Generally, for couples that are related a papel dispensation is required. This may be recorded as being from Dean Ryan, but that is unlikely. I'm not sure about the level of dispensation for age.
Best wishes, Kieran
