Hi, I am looking for any information for Michael Lane born between 1820-1830 in Athleague, Roscommon County. his father was James Lane mother Katherine (Kitty) Gallagher. James and Katherine had another son James Lane born 01 Jul 1834, possibly sister Catherine and Ann Lane. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Boo:

The baptismal records for Athleague RC parish go back to 1808 but there is a gap in records from May 1828 to August 1834.

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0537

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for children of James Lane and Catherine Gallagher. Possibly all four children were baptized in the gap period or they were baptized in a nearby parish that does not have records back before 1840.

I did not locate a marriage record.

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Athleague parish and there was a James Lane in Coollusty townland. We don't know if your James Lane was alive or leasing land in 1855 so no way to verify if this is your James Lane.

  • Yes is there a way to check any other children before that gap or after? I did my DNA i know my James Lane ends up at Andrew Lane. What a cousin believe is James Lane father was James Lane and Ann, and then to Andrew Lane who married another Ann . Can you check if there is any marriages for the other James or Andrew? Thanks

  • I did check for other children before and after the gap. See excerpt from my prior response.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for children of James Lane and Catherine Gallagher.

The earliest James Lane marriage on Roots Ireland was in 1838 in Strokestown. Wife Mary Dignan.

No Andrew Lane marriage records in Roscommon from 1800-1850.

  • Hi Boo,

Just saw your post as I have just started doing my own research into the Lanes of Athleague, Roscommon.

I am a granddaughter of Mary Josephine Lane from Athleague, Roscommon (born 1915).

Her parents were Catherine and John Lane of Athleague, Roscommon.

Hoping to get information from further back in the next couple of weeks... would be interesting to see if it ties in with your own family roots of the Lanes of Athleague.

  • You might want to contact my cousin John Lane, he is from Athleague, Roscommon Co.He is currently living in UK. He has one research on the LANES, I believe he said there are 2 different LANES. But if yours if from Athleague, Im sure you are related to me and him. The other LANES are from different town in Roscommon. Our LANES end up in Orkney Islands, Scotland. His email is jmjlane@gmail.com. I looked in my file I don't have your couple but he may have them. Let me know

  • Thanks a million for all of that info Boo.

I'm going to a local genealogist in Roscommon town on Monday and will have more info shortly after that.

I must ask about the Lanes from Orkney Islands in Scotland.

I'll pop John an email when I get all of my information straight after doing the full genealogy and see if it overlaps.

Thanks again! I'll be in touch.

  • Hi Boo,

    Just got first results back.

We are from John Lane (my great grandfather) whose family are:

    Father: Michael Lane (b. 1830 d. 1887)

    Mother: Norah (Honoria) Mullin (b. 1840 d. 1914)

They had 12 children: Only 10 came up on the census - some had died young and the names were re-used for children born later.

Bridget, Catherine, John, Michael, James, Anne, Michael, Margaret, Honoria, Margaret. (All born between 1863-1881)

I didn't go back as far as you yet to the early 1800's.

Possibly one of the above children married a Gallagher?

I'll send on what I have to your cousin John Lane and see if anything crosses over.

    Hopefully we get more answers.

    Cheers!

  • Think we've come to the end our road now.

There are no remaining Lane males to do further DNA testing. We're happy enough that the research showed that the original line of Lanes descended directly from a common ancestor in the Athleague area.

Thanks so much for putting me in touch with John Lane - he was most helpful in confirming one or two items for us.

Best wishes to you.. and all of the other Lanes out there, Boo :)
